A Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) Extern is a registered nurse enrolled in a graduate program training to become a certified CNS. The role assists transition into full CNS practice under supervision, impacting patient/client, nurses, and organization. The CNS Extern will design, implement, and evaluate patient‑specific and population‑based programs, serve as patient advocate, consultant, and researcher, and contribute to nursing leadership.
Experience- Minimum 3 years of RN work experience.
- Preferably 3 years in a specialty area.
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing required.
- Enrollment in a Master’s, post-master’s certificate, or DNP level accredited CNS program, with required coursework and clinical hours.
- Completion of CNS program within 2 years of starting the role.
- Valid RN license in Wisconsin.
- AHA Basic Life Support (BLS) or equivalent within 90 days.
