Overview

The Village is seeking a full-time Utilities Crew Leader for water supply and distribution systems. This position will work Monday through Friday from 7am - 3:30pm. This position requires on-call availability to respond to emergency events including but not limited to weather, water, or sewer events.

The full pay range for this position is $65,395.20 to $93,537.60. This position is non-exempt and eligible for overtime.

The position is an advanced position and shall act as a crew leader which works independently or as a member of a crew and is expected to perform routine tasks with minor supervision and serve as acting supervisor for water when the Deputy Director of Utilities is unavailable. The Deputy Director of Utilities will provide direction and oversight on special projects and work assignments daily.

There is frequent interaction with the general public and other Village departments.

Responsibilities

The Crew Leader – Water performs a variety of duties related to the Water and Sewer Utilities Systems and will be required to lead daily field operations for the water area of the Utility Dept and perform skilled and manual work, including but not limited to the operation, maintenance and repair of wells, reservoirs, water towers, booster stations, mains, valves, hydrants, meters and associated SCADA systems to ensure a safer and operating water system.

The Crew Leader – Water will be required to be cross trained to perform maintenance and repair of the Village’s sewer system.

  • Performs repair of water main breaks, service leaks and curb boxes; performs installation of water meters, leak detection and inspections, and customer service complaint investigations and monitors the operation of wells, reservoirs and towers, hydrants and valves including data and water sampling collection.
  • Monitor and operate SCADA control systems as well as other technological equipment commonly used in the industry to monitor systems, track flows, pressures, chlorine residuals, well run times and storage tank levels.
  • Provide information and data for rehabilitation projects (CIPP, water main breaks, flow data, etc.) and coordinate with Engineering Department.
  • Use asset management and workflow software to enter information, evaluate data, establish and close out work orders.
  • Coordinate with Deputy Director of Utilities to prepare daily work schedules and safety briefings; supervise lab, meter reading, cross-connection program, meter replacement & calibration, system maintenance and repairs.
  • Investigate customer reports of backups, odors, or surface inflow; explain causes, corrective actions, and preventive measures to property owners.
  • Cross training in maintenance and operation of a sewer system including inspection, cleaning, repair, and operation of gravity and force mains, manholes, lift stations, metering stations, and related telemetry systems to provide reliable sanitary-sewer service in full compliance.
  • Perform routine servicing and light maintenance of equipment.
  • Position requires occasional overtime work and carrying a cell phone on a rotating schedule for on-call assignments. Required to work weekend or evening hours as directed.
  • Respond to call outs for utility emergencies and snow plowing within 30 minutes of the call-out. Crew Leaders are used as back up plow drivers (training will be provided).

  • Essential Knowledge and Abilities
  • Comprehensive knowledge of water system hydraulics, water system chemistry, water main break and service disruption response, consumer confidence report (CCR) and WDNR reporting.
  • Comprehensive technical knowledge of water supply and distribution system operations and maintenance including well operation, reservoirs & towers, booster stations, chemical adjustments and system operations.
  • Working knowledge of occupational hazards and procedures to enforce safe work practices.
  • Familiarity with the basics of traffic control requirements and assist in maintaining and managing department inventory of supplies, materials, tools, signs, etc.
