Primary Responsibility

The Quality Engineer leads Six Sigma and quality engineering initiatives to improve product quality and manufacturing processes. This role uses established quality tools, statistical methods, and robust data analysis to drive continuous improvement, ensure compliance to IATF 16949 and customer‑specific requirements, and support internal and external audits. The Quality Engineer also serves as a technical liaison for best process control practices between LEJ, its customers, and internal operations.

Minimum Requirements
  • Associate’s or technical degree in Engineering, Quality, or related field (Bachelor’s degree preferred).
  • Solid understanding of:
    • Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T)
    • Print reading and interpretation
    • Gaging and hard gaging methods, and how gaging and testing demonstrate conformance
  • Working knowledge of IATF 16949 (formerly TS 16949) and related customer‑specific requirements, with the ability to interpret requirements and define what compliance looks like in practice.
  • Basic Quality Engineering proficiencies, including:
    • Basic statistical analysis;
      Six Sigma Green Belt (or equivalent) preferred
    • Understanding and application of Statistical Process Control (SPC), including software usage and interpretation of output
    • Problem‑solving methodologies (e.g., 8D, 5‑Why, Fishbone, DMAIC)
    • Core APQP tools: PPAP, Control Plans (CP), FMEA
  • Familiarity with Non‑Destructive Testing (NDT) methods; ability to achieve/maintain NDT Level I certification for all NDT methods used at LEJ (Eddy Current, Liquid Penetrant, etc.) and assist in all aspects of NDT.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills for interaction with internal teams and customers.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint); experience with quality/spc/statistical software preferred.
  • Ability to work cross‑functionally and manage multiple projects with basic project management skills.
Key Responsibilities
  • Quality System & Documentation
    • Develop, revise, and review quality procedures, work instructions, and related documentation to ensure compliance with IATF 16949 and customer‑specific requirements.
    • Develop and maintain key quality documents, including but not limited to:
      • PPAP submissions
      • Initial Sample Inspection Reports (ISIRs)
      • Process flow charts
      • Control plans and FMEAs (in partnership with cross‑functional teams)
      • Statistical analysis reports and capability studies
    • Ensure quality records are complete, accurate, and properly maintained.
  • Auditing & Compliance
    • Perform internal audits, layered process audits and other required internal audits in accordance with quality and environmental procedures.
    • Plan, schedule, create, and maintain layered process audit forms; track completion, review results weekly, and drive closure of findings.
    • Conduct specific process audits such as:
      • CQI‑9 Heat Treat System Assessments
      • CQI‑15 Welding System Assessments
      • CQI‑27 Casting System Assessments
    • Support and/or lead activities for the annual IATF 16949 QMS audit, including preparation, evidence gathering, and response to findings.
  • Non‑Destructive Testing (NDT) & Special Processes
    • Eddy Current
      • Measure and test parts to establish master parts.
      • Secure quotes, manage POs, and coordinate EDM scribes for master parts.
      • Maintain an up‑to‑date inventory of all Eddy Current masters and verify them at defined intervals (e.g., quarterly).
      • Qualify new Eddy Current machines and new parts for Eddy Current inspection in production.
      • Provide Level I and Level II certification training if applicable for shop floor personnel.
    • Liquid Penetrant
      • Provide Level I and Level II certification training if applicable for shop floor personnel.
      • Perform and coordinate required annual/periodic eye examinations for NDT personnel.
    • Maintain applicable certifications (personal and process) and ensure compliance with internal and customer requirements for special processes.
  • SPC & Data Analysis
    • Conduct SPC training.
    • Support implementation, maintenance, and effective use of SPC software and tools across assigned processes.
    • Analyze data from SPC and other data sources to identify trends, process variation, and opportunities for improvement.
