Position: Scientist II / Senior Scientist - Drug Mechanism of Action (MOA)

Scientist II / Senior Scientist - Drug Mechanism of Action (MOA)

About Hexagon Bio:

Hexagon Bio is a drug discovery company focused on developing next-generation antibody–drug conjugates (ADCs) with novel payloads derived from natural products. We combine genomics, data science, machine learning, synthetic biology, automation, and medicinal chemistry to discover evolutionarily refined small molecules from microbial genomes and advance them toward transformative cancer therapies.

Hexagon Bio is seeking a Scientist II / Senior Scientist to join the Payload Biology team and play a key role in elucidating the mechanisms of action (MOA) of novel natural product-based ADC payloads.

In this role, you will design and execute biochemical and cell-based mechanistic assays that directly inform structure-activity relationship (SAR) campaigns and guide medicinal chemistry optimization. Your work will be central to understanding how new payload classes function, identifying liabilities and resistance mechanisms, and shaping decisions around program prioritization and advancement.

This is a hands-on, laboratory-focused role with significant scientific ownership and close collaboration across medicinal chemistry, protein science, computational biology, and cell biology teams.

Key Responsibilities
  • Design, develop, and execute cell-based and biochemical assays to elucidate the MOA of novel ADC payload classes.
  • Build mechanistically informative assays that support SAR-driven medicinal chemistry optimization.
  • Investigate payload activity, selectivity, and resistance mechanisms to inform program strategy and down selection.
  • Partner with computational biology colleagues to integrate omics data into MOA and resistance studies.
  • Collaborate closely with ADC, chemistry, protein science, and cell biology teams to ensure assays reflect biologically and therapeutically relevant contexts.
  • Interpret complex datasets and translate results into clear, actionable recommendations for project teams.
  • Present data, conclusions, and strategic insights to cross-functional teams and leadership.
  • Maintain high-quality electronic laboratory notebooks and adhere to safety and best laboratory practices.
  • Contribute to a team culture grounded in scientific rigor, transparency, and collaboration.
Qualifications
  • PhD in Biochemistry, Cell Biology, Biophysics, Pharmacology, Chemical Biology, or a related field, with 3–5+ years of post-degree industry experience in biotech or pharma.
  • Demonstrated experience elucidating drug mechanisms of action for small molecules or cytotoxic payloads.
  • Strong hands-on experience with cell-based mechanistic assays relevant to oncology or targeted therapeutics.
  • Knowledge and expertise with flow cytometry is required.
  • Expertise in developing biochemical assays that generate quantitative, mechanistically interpretable data to guide SAR is a plus.
  • Experience with ADC payloads, cytotoxic agents, or targeted oncology therapies is a strong plus.
  • Proven ability to think mechanistically, design creative assays, and solve complex biological problems.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and drive projects forward in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong communication skills and experience influencing cross-functional decision-making.
  • Highly collaborative, proactive, and motivated by scientific discovery and innovation.

What We Offer:

  • A dynamic, flexible environment with meaningful scientific ownership and impact.
  • A transparent culture supported by regular All Hands meetings.
  • Competitive compensation, equity, and a robust benefits package (medical, dental, vision, and voluntary benefits via Tri Net).
  • 401(k) plan and opportunities for rapid career growth.
  • Support for attending scientific conferences and professional development.
  • Access to Menlo Park Labs amenities, including shuttle service, gym, climbing wall, pool, sports courts, café, bike storage, and EV charging.
  • Team-building events such as Hexagon Happy Hours and company celebrations.
Additional Information:

The salary range is dependent on the level of Scientist that is hired (Scientist II / Senior Scientist). The salary range for this full-time position is $140,000 - $180,000 + bonus + equity +…
