Aboutthe Department
The Public Works Department is responsible for planning, building and maintaining the City’s infrastructure including its facilities, streets, sidewalks, water, stormwater, parks, trees, landfill and transportation system. The Department protects the City’s investments in infrastructure and public facilities to ensure the health and safety of the community in an efficient, sustainable and cost-effective manner. The Department also provides private developments with oversight engineering review to insure that these projects are constructed according to city specifications.
The Department consists of three Divisions:
Engineering, Maintenance and Transportation. Engineering has three sections:
Capital Improvement Plan, Utilities and Development Services.
The ideal candidate is an independent thinker who thrives in a fast-paced, constantly changing environment. The individual selected will be an excellent communicator with the demonstrated ability to establish relationships across divisions and departments. He/she will have technical engineering skills and project management capabilities to complete timely plan reviews and the ability to communicate proactively with the city’s planning and building divisions, developers and contractors.
He/she will be expected to perform the full range of professional and technical engineering work in the Land Development section, including review of planning and building permit applications with regards to onsite and offsite improvements, civil design, hydrology, landscape and irrigation, subdivision maps, FEMA, NPDES, and
C.3 requirements.
This position will supervise technical staff such as assistant and associate engineers and inspectors in the plan review and inspection of private owner work in the public right-of-way and easements.
Minimum QualificationsAny combination of training and experience that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be:
- Equivalent to graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with major coursework in civil engineering or a related engineering field
- Five years of professional engineering design, plan review, and project administration experience, including two years in a supervisory or lead capacity
- Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid California driver s license by time of appointment
- Possession of a Registered Professional Civil Engineer license issued by the State of California
