With multiple championships and a strong community focus, the Redbirds are a centerpiece of Memphis sports. The Memphis Redbirds are a proud member club of Diamond Baseball Holdings (DBH). DBH was formed in 2021 to support, promote, and enhance Minor League Baseball through best practices, professional management, innovation, and investment.

Position Overview

The Assistant, Field Operations will support the preparation and maintenance of Auto Zone Park for Memphis Redbirds games, as well as other events such as concerts and festivals. This hands-on role offers a unique opportunity to gain experience in professional baseball turf management, including field maintenance, agronomic practices, and irrigation systems. Ideal candidates are passionate about sports turf, eager to learn, and ready to advance their careers within Minor League Baseball groundskeeping.

Job Functions
  • Assist in the management of all turf operations of Auto Zone Park on a daily basis, including maintaining, repairing, protecting and managing turf and dirt surfaces.
  • Assist in the management and execution of key field operations items including painting/striping field, fertilization and weed management, infield tarp placement and removal, skinned-area preparation, including pitcher’s mound, bullpens, home plate and infield areas, edging foul lines, base lines and other transition points, pre-game setup and post-game closure of field for home games and other events, and set up and take down of baseball equipment for team practice and drills.
  • Assist with implementation of maintenance and preventative schedules for the playing surfaces, surrounding turf areas, and the common grounds around the stadium.
  • Assist with the execution and management of the field for non-baseball events and work closely with staff and outside vendors to ensure the turf is properly prepared and ready for all events.
  • Assist with the hiring and training of all seasonal staff, game-day employees, and seasonal hires in grounds duties.
  • Work closely with stadium operations staff and front office to help manage off-season facility projects.
  • Make regular field inspections to ensure the quality and safety of the playing field and surrounding turf.
  • Develop and maintain working relationships with managers, coaches, umpires, etc.
  • Ensure the safe and proper operation of all equipment utilized, maintaining that equipment in safe, clean, and operable condition.
  • Willingly engage in proactive outside landscape maintenance of turf, shrubs, gravel, and irrigation.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Physical Demands & Working Environment
  • Required to work long hours standing and walking around during seasons and events.
  • Sitting, standing, walking, reaching with arms and hands, climbing, balancing, stooping, bending, lifting, pushing, pulling, kneeling, or crouching are all part of this position.
  • Must be able to handle weather-related elements such as rain and heat.
  • Some travel may be required.
Required Experience and Education
  • Turfgrass Degree or completion of a minimum of a 2-year turfgrass certification program
  • At least one year of experience in a similar role.
