Summary

Staff Development and Infection Control (RN) serves as the coordinator of an Infection Prevention and Control Program, and provides total nursing care for residents. The role includes supervising and guiding clinical staff in infection prevention and control practices, collecting and analyzing infection data, consulting on risk assessments, leading education and training, and implementing evidence‑based practices per regulatory guidelines. Scope of work may be modified by state specific rules under the Nurse Practice Act.

Responsibilities
  • Collecting, analyzing, and providing infection data and trends to nursing staff and healthcare practitioners.
  • Consulting on infection risk assessment, prevention, and control strategies.
  • Providing education, training, and implementing evidence‑based infection control practices mandated by regulatory agencies and CDC guidelines.
  • Overseeing essential elements of a surveillance system, including standardized definitions, surveillance tools, walking rounds, risk identification, and statistical analysis to uncover outbreaks.
  • Ensuring the facility’s infection control reports describe types of infections and identify trends.
  • Providing the facility with summaries of staff practice observations, investigations of infection causes, and identification of underlying causes of trends.
  • Defining surveillance data collection frequency and methods.
  • Monitoring practices to ensure consistent implementation of established infection prevention and control policies based on current standards.
  • Sharing surveillance reports with appropriate individuals, including the director of nursing and medical director.
  • Reviewing antibiotic use.
  • Monitoring implementation of standard precautions to prevent healthcare‑associated transmission.
  • Implementing transmission‑based precautions for residents known to be or suspected of being infected or colonized with infectious agents.
  • Planning containment of outbreaks, considering the needs of residents and staff.
  • Performing other tasks as assigned.

  • Skilled in directing and motivating the workforce.

  • Effective communication with residents, families, and all organizational levels.
  • Ability to react decisively and quickly in emergency situations.
  • Knowledge of training techniques for clinical staff.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
Qualifications

Education
:
Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing.

Licenses / Certification
:
Valid state nursing license; valid CPR certification.

Experience
:
Two years of nursing experience, preferably with training in Infection Control.
