Description
The Locomotive Mechanic inspects, repairs, and maintains locomotives consistent with company policies. Team members will be required to perform mechanical maintenance as needed. Collaboration and teamwork are essential to the success of this role, the company, and all team members. Respect and professionalism are expected across the organization.
We will provide on-the-job training.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Implement and comply with the company safety plan.
- Maintain a respectful workplace environment.
- Communicate obstacles to success effectively and promptly.
- Ensure clear communication among all parties.
- Seek safe and productive ways to perform tasks.
- Follow confidentiality policies as per the employee manual.
- Coordinate locomotive maintenance with other departments.
- Comply with FRA guidelines on Personal Blue Signal Protection of Workers.
- Work with customers to ensure high levels of customer service.
- Coordinate with connecting railroads for efficient interchange of cars and locomotives.
- Perform air tests, inspect, and repair locomotives or components for defects and wear, following FRA and manufacturer guidelines.
- Adhere to all rules, regulations, and programs, including drug and alcohol policies.
- Be knowledgeable of interchange rules related to locomotives.
- Use wear limit gauges and testing equipment proficiently.
- Complete written forms, reports, and FRA documentation accurately.
- Become a qualified locomotive inspector according to FRA regulations.
- Understand relevant state and federal regulations.
- Perform emergency repairs and re-railing of rolling stock.
- Solve practical problems with limited standardization, interpreting various instructions.
- Operate tools and equipment such as welders, torches, hammers, jacks, and other mechanical tools.
- Develop subordinate employees' skills to ensure qualified successors.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

Education and Experience
- High School diploma or equivalent.
Reading & Language Skills
- Ability to interpret safety rules, operating instructions, and regulations.
- Effective communication skills, both verbal and written, including updating rules and manuals for compliance.
Certificates and Licenses
- Valid driver’s license and insurability to operate company vehicles and equipment.
- Ability to qualify as a Service Engineer per FRA regulations, including electrical duties.
