Description
The Locomotive Mechanic inspects, repairs, and maintains locomotives consistent with company policies. The team member will be required to perform mechanical maintenance as needed. Working collaboratively with others is essential for success. All team members are expected to treat each other with respect and professionalism.
We will provide on-the-job training.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Implement and comply with the company safety plan.
- Maintain a respectful workplace environment.
- Communicate obstacles to success effectively and openly.
- Ensure clear communication between all parties.
- Seek safe and productive performance methods.
- Follow confidentiality policies as outlined in the employee manual.
- Coordinate locomotive maintenance with other departments.
- Comply with FRA guidelines on personal safety signals.
- Work with customers to provide high-quality service.
- Collaborate with connecting railroads for efficient interchange.
- Perform air tests, inspect, and repair locomotives or components for defects and wear, following FRA and manufacturer guidelines.
- Adhere to all rules, regulations, and programs, including drug and alcohol policies.
- Be knowledgeable of interchange rules related to locomotives.
- Use wear limit gauges and testing equipment proficiently.
- Complete reports and forms accurately, including FRA reports related to machinist responsibilities.
- Work towards becoming a qualified locomotive inspector per FRA regulations.
- Understand state and federal regulations pertaining to the railroad industry.
- Perform emergency repairs and re-railing of rolling stock.
- Apply problem-solving skills to practical situations with limited standardization.
- Familiarity with tools such as welders, torches, hammers, jacks, and other mechanical, pneumatic, tools.
- Develop subordinate employees' skills for succession planning.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

Education and Experience
- High school diploma or equivalent.
Reading & Language Skills
- Ability to interpret safety rules, operating instructions, and regulations.
- Effective communication skills, both verbal and written, to interact with groups and update manuals.
Certificates and Licenses
- Valid driver’s license and insurability for operating company vehicles and equipment.
- Ability to become a qualified Service Engineer according to FRA regulations, including performing electrical duties as required.
