SummaryThis position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP) – a student loan payment reimbursement program. Eligibility must be confirmed in accordance with VHA policy and an EDRP application must be submitted within four months of appointment. Program award amounts (up to $200,000) and the duration of eligibility (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services office after a complete review of the application.
Qualifications- Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.

- United States Citizenship:
Non‑citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA policy. - English Language Proficiency:
Candidates must be proficient in spoken and written English to be appointed as authorized by 38 U.S.C. 7403(f). - Education:
A master’s degree in Social Work from a school of social work fully accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) is required. Graduates of schools in candidacy status are not eligible until full accreditation is achieved. A doctoral degree in Social Work does NOT substitute for the master’s degree. - Licensure/Certification:
Persons hired in the GS‑0185 series must be licensed or certified by a state to practice social work at the master’s level. Current state requirements can be found by visiting vaww.va.gov. - Experience:
Senior Social Worker GS‑12 specialized experience requires at least two years of post‑licensure practice, with one year at the GS‑11 grade level. Experience should demonstrate advanced practice skills in areas such as assessment of abuse, neglect or intimate partner violence; clinical social work skills; patient privacy and confidentiality; advocacy with community service providers; and independent assessment of psychosocial functioning and needs. - Knowledge,
Skills and Abilities
(KSAs):
Candidates must demonstrate proficiency in specialized interventions and treatment modalities for specialty programs, including individual, group and family counseling, advanced level psychosocial and/or case management, complex differential diagnosis, outcome evaluations, and the development of policies and procedures. Supervision of interns and post‑doctoral fellows is also expected. - Grandfathering Provision:
Current VHA employees who meet the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation may qualify under the Grandfathering Provision. - Reference: For more information on the qualification standard, visit VA Qualification Standards.
- Performance Level: GS‑12.
- Physical Requirements:
Must comply with VA Directive and Handbook 5019 – Employee Occupational Health Services.
- Provide a full range of psychosocial assessment services and psychiatric diagnoses of mental disorders, including tele‑mental health services.
- Educate patients, families and significant others.
- Deliver comprehensive evidence‑based psychotherapeutic interventions, including individual, family and group psychotherapy.
- Conduct advanced level psychosocial and/or case management as required.
- Provide clinical supervision to interns and post‑doctoral fellows in behavioral health and social services.
- Develop, implement and document psychotherapeutic treatment plans for an assigned caseload, with prompt completion of clinical reminders.
- Implement outcome evaluations to measure effectiveness of practice and inform system changes.
- Work independently at the VA Medical Center in Memphis, assuming full professional responsibility for assessment findings, care decisions and documentation.
- Interview veterans and their families to establish facts about present problems and causes, and the impact on functioning and health.
