Summary

This Advanced Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist (DRT) - Interventional Radiology (IR) - position is assigned to the Memphis Veterans Affairs Healthcare System - Medical Imaging Service in the IR section. The Memphis Veterans Affairs Healthcare System is a complex facility that provides services in specialized and complex areas of diagnostic imaging and a comprehensive interventional radiology program.

Basic Requirements
  • United States Citizenship:
    Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Certification:
    All applicants must be certified in general radiologic technology by the American Registry of Radiologic Technology – Radiography (ARRT) (R).
  • Advanced ARRT certification is required for assignments that include computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and/or Mammography duties performed independently – as applicable.
  • Education:

    Completion of a full-time training course of at least 24 months in a post‑high school diagnostic radiologic technology program, evidenced by a certificate or an associate degree accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT) or other recognized accrediting agencies.
  • Credentialing Standards:
    Must meet the credentialing standards in 42 CFR Part 75 – Standards for the Accreditation of Educational Programs and the Credentialing of Radiographic Personnel.
  • Grade Determinations:
    Applicants must meet the grade requirements for a GS‑10 DRT and possess required experience (see below).
Preferred Experience
  • One to two years’ experience in the IR Hybrid Surgical Equipment/Room and vascular interventional radiology, pain management, and/or interventional technology.
  • Knowledge of vascular systems and major vessel anatomy, specialized equipment for digital subtraction systems, and interventional procedures.
  • Excellent administrative skills, experience with Picture Archiving Systems (PACS), regulatory readiness, and Joint Commission accreditation.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of radiation protection standards, dosage monitoring, advanced imaging software, basic physics of X‑ray operation, and patient positioning for complex imaging studies (CT, MRI, IR, ultrasound, mammography).
Physical Requirements
  • Heavy lifting – 45 pounds and over.
  • Moderate carrying – 15‑44 pounds.
  • Pushing for up to 4 hours.
  • Reaching above shoulder.
  • Use of fingers – good dexterity required (both hands).
  • Prolonged walking, standing, repeated bending.
  • Rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously.
  • Far vision correctable to 20/20 in at least one eye.
  • Ability to distinguish basic colors.
  • Hearing (aid permitted).
  • Speed in working, emotional stability.
  • Ability to stand and work while wearing a lead apron for possibly long periods of time.
Duties
  • Accurately operate a wide variety of imaging equipment to obtain examinations of acceptable quality while minimizing radiation exposure.
  • Maintain expert specialization in complex areas of interventional radiology and provide after‑hours on‑call coverage at TVHS.
  • Assist with complex diagnostic and interventional cardiovascular equipment during imaging procedures.
  • Participate in the Interventional Radiology quality assessment and improvement programs, fostering teamwork with IR radiologists and nursing staff.
  • Provide patient experience with timely, well‑organized exams and technical expertise during each procedure.
  • Perform complex imaging procedures including biliary drain exchanges, tunnel catheter exchanges, portacath placements, shuntograms with declotting, and percutaneous nephrostomy tube placements.
  • Apply Infection Control and safety procedures for patients and staff, in accordance with Medical Center and Medical Imaging Service policies.
  • Operate all electrical and mechanical equipment safely and use protective equipment as required.
  • Use independent judgment to modify exams or treatment procedures as needed for patient conditions and body habitus.
  • Comply with all safety/fire prevention rules and regulations.
Work Schedule

8:00 am – 4:30 pm; on‑call required. Compressed/flexible schedule not authorized. Telework, virtual, or relocation/incentives not available.
