As a Sterile Processing Tech II, you will perform daily activities for cleaning, decontamination, packaging, sterilizing, and storing of surgical instruments and supplies.
You may serve as a resource person for the non‑certified SPD techs, maintain inventory levels and ensure proper care and operation of equipment, and model appropriate behavior as exemplified in MLH Mission, Vision, and Values.
- Performs activities for the decontamination, assembly, packaging, processing, and sterilization of surgical instruments according to standards. Cleans and decontaminates instruments, trays and a wide variety of equipment and supplies. Properly disassembles, cleans, and reassembles equipment.
- Prepares for sterilization following proper procedures; sterilizes instruments, linens, treatment trays and other items using appropriate sterilization methods and equipment.
- Participates in quality monitoring and evaluation activities; documents and maintains daily records of QA and sterilization functions.
- Stocks and replenishes supplies and equipment. Ensures that supplies and equipment are maintained and ready for use on an as needed basis and are returned to correct storage areas. Assists in maintaining appropriate par levels.
- Maintains and ensures adherence to the sterile field by applying principles of aseptic techniques in accordance with regulatory guidelines and infection control procedures.
- Performs other job functions as assigned or requested.
- High School Diploma or Equivalent
- Technical Degree or Diploma in Surgical Technology
- Technical Degree or Diploma in Sterile Processing
- 1‑3 years of sterile processing and/or surgical field experience
- Certified Sterile Processing and Distribution Technician Certification from the Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution
Skills And Abilities
- Sound working knowledge of concepts, practices, and procedures related to sterile processing.
- Understanding of the principles and procedures related to infection control and aseptic technique.
- Demonstrates competency required to operate sterile processing related equipment and supplies and perform the essential functions of the job.
- Ability to work without close supervision and exercise initiative and independent judgment once technical training has been completed.
- Exhibit manual dexterity and speed in performing assembly line tasks.
- Ability to communicate promptly, clearly and accurately in both written and oral form.
- Ability to organize tasks and maintain control of work flow.
- Work requires the ability to read and understand complex instructions and perform basic arithmetic calculations.
- May be required to float to other locations as needed.
There are no supervisory or lead responsibilities assigned to this position.
Physical Demands- The physical activities of this position may include climbing, pushing, standing, hearing, walking, reaching, grasping, kneeling, stooping, and repetitive motion.
- Must have good balance and coordination.
- The physical requirements of this position are medium work – exerting up to 50 lbs. of force occasionally and/or up to 25 lbs. of force frequently.
- The Associate is required to have close visual acuity including color, depth perception, and field of vision to perform an activity, such as assessing patients, preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; or extensive reading.
- Exposure to patient body fluids as well as exposure to hazardous or poisonous materials.
- Ability to react quickly to emergency situations.
