OverviewServe as a lead and provide expertise in clinical genetics to counsel, communicate, and support families on the implications of genetic disorders. Assess risk, investigate potential genetic problems, interpret information, and provide case management and advocacy while modeling appropriate behavior as exemplified in MLH Mission, Vision and Values.
What You Will Do- Review relevant medical history and family history, medical literature, and outside records to assess or confirm the risk of genetic conditions.
- Assess the risk of occurrence or recurrence of genetic conditions.
- Provide counseling to facilitate patient and family understanding of genetic conditions.
- Recommend genetic testing in collaboration with the health‑care team.
- Discuss genetic testing with families, including benefits, risks, limitations and familial implications.
- Advocate on behalf of patients and families for protection of health, safety and rights.
- Perform psychosocial assessments and identify patient education resources and support organizations.
- Document patient encounters and genetic counseling in the medical record system.
- Serve as a resource for information regarding genetic testing and identification of laboratories for send‑out testing.
- See and counsel patients independently in the genetic counseling clinic for appropriate referrals and follow‑up of results.
- Perform clinical supervision and/or education of trainees (students, residents, fellows, etc.).
- Initiate, design and conduct educational programs; plan and implement procedures; monitor and integrate new technologies, theories and community resources.
- Participate in local and national genetic counseling professional societies.
- Provide clinical care, contribute to research or support laboratory services by using genetic counseling skills and competencies.
- Assist in planning, development and implementation of clinical practice improvements, research initiatives and education projects under supervision of the Genetic Counseling Director.
- Show initiative to develop content expertise in specific areas of genetic counseling.
- Perform other job functions as needed.
- Master's Degree in Genetic Counseling.
- Successful completion of CITI Training.
- 3–5 years of genetic counseling experience.
- Formal training in clinical supervision of trainees.
- Core genetic counseling skills and competencies; proficiency in ACGC practice‑based competencies.
- Advanced level of clinical practice skills.
- Thorough knowledge of current theories and principles of human genetics and best‑practice counseling techniques.
- Motivation to increase knowledge of genetic principles through continuing education and contribution to clinical research.
- Flexibility and willingness to adapt to new practices and policies as part of a growing team.
- Demonstrated ability to interact with peers, medical staff, patients/families and other constituents involved in patient care.
- Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills.
- Ability to supervise students and serve as a role model.
- Ability to function independently in some aspects of patient care, such as counseling complex diagnoses and recurrence risks.
- Ability to conduct all activities in accordance with professional ethics and values.
- ABGC Genetic Counselor – American Board of Genetic Counseling.
- Licensed Genetic Counselor – Tennessee – Tennessee Department of Health Health Professional Boards.
Serve as guidance and mentorship to Genetic Counselor I.
Physical Demands- Climbing, pushing, standing, hearing, walking, reaching, grasping, kneeling, stooping, repetitive motion.
- Must maintain good balance and coordination.
