Tax Senior, Core Tax Services

JOB DESCRIPTION

The Tax Senior, Core Tax Services is responsible for utilizing research skills, applying tax foundational knowledge to understand potential tax issues, gathering client information necessary for filing, participating in tax planning, recognizing and communicating potential risks, preparing tax accrual work papers, and working with tax software applications to complete tax returns for review. In this role, the Tax Senior may be charged with supervising and reviewing the work of Core Tax Services Associates.

• Tax Compliance
  • Ensure clients comply with authorities while minimizing tax and reporting burdens, and ensure self and client service teams comply with Firm policies, standards, and the BDO Tax Quality Manual (TQM).
  • Manage projects by planning the tax process and procedures with quality, answer preparer questions, and coordinate engagement from onset by communicating expectations and procedures with preparers.
  • Conduct detailed reviews on all returns and provide appropriate review notes for preparers; raise potential tax issues; meet internal deadlines for client expectations; identify book‑to‑tax differences.
• Research
  • Identify when research is needed; frame issues clearly and concisely; report analysis; apply most Firm and professional standards for preparation of WTA and tax returns.
• ASC 740 (FAS 109 and FIN 48) Tax Accruals
  • Apply Firm policies, standards, and TQM regarding FAS 109 and FIN 48; prepare provision work papers and discuss with team; identify and discuss uncertain positions; review and prepare footnote disclosures in compliance with 740‑10‑55.
• Tax Consulting
  • Assist in developing, recommending, and implementing efficient methods to maximize client benefits, particularly decreasing current and future taxes; identify consulting opportunities; provide support for consulting projects; gather relevant information for controversy work; document significant tax positions in memoranda; archive in Go File Room .
• Strategy Development
  • Introduce and develop new or improved ideas to benefit clients, the firm, or personnel; prepare studies of tax implications and offer alternative actions.
• Other duties as required

• May supervise and manage day‑to‑day work assignments of Core Tax Services Associates.
• Provide verbal and written performance feedback as needed.
• Act as mentor to Core Tax Services Associates.

• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Economics, or Statistics required, or Bachelor’s degree in other focus area with CPA certification required.
• Master’s in Accountancy or Taxation preferred.

• Two or more years of prior relevant tax experience and/or experience in public accounting, private industry accounting or consulting/professional services preferred.
• Industry expertise in one or more tax specialty preferred.
• Prior basic supervisory experience preferred.

• CPA certification, Attorney (admitted to practice in a U.S. jurisdiction), or IRS Enrolled Agent (EA) (or equivalent) preferred.
• Possession of other professional degrees or certifications applicable to role preferred.

• Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite preferred.
• Experience with tax research databases and tax compliance process software preferred.
