Overview

Works under the general supervision of the Chief, Mechanical and Electrical Section, who makes assignments with very broad objectives and factors which are to receive special consideration. At the highest level, serves as a senior electrical engineer with responsibility for individual work involving the application of electrical engineering knowledge and skills to unique electrical features for flood control and navigation within the St.
Francis Basin and the District's floating plant operating on the Mississippi River and Tributaries. Coordinate and provide technical electrical assistance to Construction & Operations Divisions along with other segments of the Engineering Division. Flood control and navigation projects include pumping stations, outlet structures, floodgates, lift stations, gravity turnouts, Programmer Login Controller systems, fiber optic communications, induced current corrosion/cathodic protection systems, electrical substations and various other support facilities.
The floating plant includes dredges, towboats, tugs, tenders, derrick boats, quarter boats, barges, bank graders, and dry docks. Other projects include facilities with power and lighting systems, underground and overhead electrical distribution, control systems, and emergency back electric systems. Incumbent solves unusual problems during rehabilitation/modification of major systems. Work involves both alternating current and direct current systems. Requires a graduate engineer with experience applying electrical engineering theory, concepts, and criteria.
Writes and applies guidance such as standards, codes, criteria, technical publications, and guide specifications. Knowledge and experience in using sophisticated electrical diagnostic equipment and instructs Corps personnel in the application of the NEC and other applicable codes and standards.
- DESIGN — Prepares design data, analysis, drawings using AutoCAD/Revit and supporting documents relating to electrical features of a project. 60%
- REVIEW — Performs quality control and quality assurance (QC/QA) reviews in accordance with the Quality Control Plan of implementation documents with high attention to detail. 30%
- INSPECT — Participates in the inspection of completed works programs, including periodic inspection of pumping stations, gated control structures, siphons, and culverts. 10%
Basic Education Requirement
- Bachelor’s degree (or higher) in engineering. The program must (1) lead to a degree in a school of engineering accredited by ABET; OR (2) include differential and integral calculus and courses in five of seven areas (statics/dynamics; strength of materials; fluid mechanics/hydraulics; thermodynamics; electrical fields and circuits; materials science; and other comparable areas such as optics, heat transfer, soil mechanics, or electronics).

Education and Experience:
College-level education, training, and/or technical experience that provides knowledge of the physical and mathematical sciences underlying engineering and practical understanding of engineering sciences and techniques. Adequacy demonstrated by one of the following: reference to official qualifications standards (link omitted here).
GS-7 to GS-12—In addition to the basic requirement, candidates must meet specialized experience or equivalent education as described below. Do not substitute education for experience at GS-12 to meet the qualification requirement.
