Job Description

  • Responsible for field implementation of the Radiation Safety Program, ensuring compliance with company, local, state, and federal radiation safety policies and regulations.
  • Monitors radiological work controls and activities involving radioactive material. Interprets and verifies field data obtained from radiation surveys using appropriate instrumentation and analyses.
  • Ensures the safe collection, storage, packaging, transportation, and subsequent disposal of radioactive material.
  • Processes routine incoming radioactive shipments, checks for excessive contamination or dose levels, performs wipe tests, cleans packages, delivers shipments to approved users, and cross-checks against inventory for approval.
  • Verifies quantity radioactive material license limits, records new and amended permit information for all radionuclides received, and enters information in the HIS-20 database system.
  • Stays current on local, state, federal, and Energy Solutions policies and procedures concerning shipment/transportation of radioactive materials.
  • Collects, analyzes, and interprets results of various samples to ensure compliance with regulations and environmental standards, creates reports for management, and determines necessary corrective actions.
  • Conducts area surveys to identify elevated exposure or contamination levels and responds to any incidents or emergencies involving radionuclides.
  • Performs calculations to determine radiation levels and radioactive contamination concentrations in areas, soil, material, equipment, and air.
  • Issues radiation work permits and briefs personnel on radiological conditions and work requirements.
  • Maintains data for a computer-based radiological work permit system, ensuring only authorized personnel have access to controlled areas.
  • Develops, writes, and processes radiation safety procedures, instructions, and guidance.
  • Operates, issues, and calibrates radiological counting, detection, and air sampling equipment.
  • Performs and documents radiological instrumentation reviews, evaluations, and investigations.
  • Ensures proper operation and maintenance of radiological controls equipment and procures material, parts, and equipment needed for the site Radiation Safety Program.
  • Participates in emergency preparation drills and responses.
  • Provides training and implements monitoring programs to protect personnel from radiation hazards.
  • Investigates and documents radiological occurrences, corrective action program issues, and events, recommending long‑term corrective actions.
  • Maintains field radiation protection records such as survey logs and radiation work permit entry and exit logs.
  • May lead and direct the work of Radiation Safety Technician I and II staff, provides training, and ensures their qualification for performance.
  • Responsible for the safety performance of other radiation safety technicians.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Job Requirements and Skills
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Detailed knowledge of local, state, and federal radiation safety compliance regulations.
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of radiation safety compliance.
  • Skill in using radiation monitoring instrumentation and methods.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint) and database applications.
  • Ability to schedule tasks assigned to other radiation safety technicians.
  • Ability to identify exposure levels, recognize trends, and develop radiation controls.
  • Ability to handle complex work and broader scopes involving multiple subject areas.
Physical and Mental Requirements
  • Ability to lift, carry, push, pull up to 50 lb; handle, grip, and reach above or below shoulder.
  • Use of hands and feet to accomplish tasks as assigned.
  • Sit, stand, walk, climb, bend/stoop, crouch, squat/kneel, twist at the waist, and balance.
  • Climb hand‑over‑hand on ladders, stairs, and scaffolds; work at elevated heights.
  • Effective communication in clear English; pass hearing conservation audiogram as required.
  • Basic math and computer skills.
  • Perceive depth, adjust focus, and basic hand/eye coordination.
  • See closely and at distance, distinguish colors/shades, and maintain peripheral vision.
