Job Description & How to Apply Below

Our School:

Libertas is a public charter school serving the Frayser neighborhood in Memphis. Our mission is to be a school for human flourishing: cultivating minds, hands, and hearts for lives of wonder, work, and love. We offer a rich, rigorous, and personalized education through the method of Dr. Maria Montessori and the classical liberal arts. We offer an attachment village of wraparound family supports and develop virtues of character.

Tennessee has twice named Libertas a Reward School – a top 15% school. We currently serve infant and toddler, early childhood and elementary at our founding location and a middle school on a second nearby campus. Over the next 1-2 years we will open a small high school (250 students in grades 9 to 12) that uniquely imparts literary and cultural tradition while also fostering student enterprise and work of the hand – together preparing students for college, career, and citizenship.

We also operate a nationally-accredited, state-licensed teacher training program. Learn more about Libertas on our website.

Role

Summary:
  • Lead Physical Education classes for groups of approximately 20-25 children to promote physical activity, develop motor skills, and encourage proper exercise and healthy living.
  • Lead after-school sports activities, including coaching after-school sports teams (and/or recruiting and overseeing coaches for those teams). Libertas has or is planning to have intramural or rec league teams in sports such as basketball, soccer, baseball, softball, cross country, etc., and one or more competitive teams are being planned.
  • Full-time role. The school day begins at 7:30 and ends at 3:45. After-school programs go until 5:30 daily. Based on school needs and candidate interest, there is some flexibility available to create a work schedule that will allow for school-day teaching as well as after-school programming.
  • Ensure that play equipment (balls, hula hoops, etc.) is well maintained, available for children to use, and properly stored at the end of each day.
  • Assist with periodic school events outside of the normal schedule.
  • Supervise students within the classroom and outside of the classroom as needed, including at lunch, recess, and nap.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Reports to:

Assistant Principal of Administration, Middle School Director, and/or After school Programs Manager.
  • Key relationships:

Qualifications and Traits:
  • Bachelor’s degree or higher required. State teaching license with physical education endorsement strongly preferred.
  • At least two years of experience working with or coaching children in high-need communities preferred.
  • Exceptional group management skills, including the ability to manage groups of 20-30 children in indoor and outdoor settings.
  • Willing to serve all children, regardless of background or needs, in an inclusive and supportive setting. Fortitude for the challenges we will face.
  • Flexible, takes initiative, and has a strong sense of personal ownership of responsibilities.
  • Work collaboratively, with a growth mindset. Give and receive feedback in a spirit of craftsmanship.
  • Model of character and virtue.
  • Dedication to support human flourishing through the school’s philosophy of wonder, work, and love for all students.
Compensation:
  • Salary/wage based on qualifications and experience; competitive with the local school district and nearby charter schools.
  • Eligible for increases or stipends for performance or additional duties.
  • Investment in faculty professional development and growth. We also offer to eligible applicants our Teacher Residency program, which provides financial sponsorship and additional coaching and support to achieve state licensure and/or Montessori
certification. Please contact us for more details.
