KIPP Memphis Public Schools is part of KIPP (Knowledge Is Power Program), a national network of tuition-free, open-enrollment, public schools that are successful in helping students from educationally underserved communities develop the knowledge, skills, character, and habits needed to succeed in college and the competitive world beyond. There are currently 275 KIPP schools across the nation serving nearly 120,000 students. Founded in 2002, KIPP Memphis serves over 1,200 K-12 students in our three North Memphis schools and almost 900 alumni on their journeys to-and-through college with our KIPP Forward Program.

Classroom Volunteer Duties

Classroom Volunteers assist with daily activities as needed. Specific tasks and activities include but are not limited to:

  • Interacting and engaging with the children.
  • Supporting the interaction of a child with other children in classroom activities.
  • Assisting the children with hand-washing, preparing for snack time, etc. for primary grades.
  • Assisting the classroom teacher and teaching assistants with transitions between different segments of the class.
  • Helping to supervise the children and keep them safe.
  • Proctoring assessments as needed

Classroom Volunteers operate under the supervision and guidance of teachers and teaching assistants at all times.

Requirements

Commitment to the mission and values of KIPP Memphis Public Schools, and enthusiasm for working with children. No prior childcare experience is required.

  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively with KIPP Memphis staff, parents, and children.
  • Ability to commit to at least one 2-hour class per week for the full 3-month session.
  • Good awareness of body in space, and ability to transition quickly from sitting to standing positions.
  • Maintain a positive and flexible attitude in the classroom to help children with a wide variety of activities
  • Must be at least 21 years of age.
Salary

Salary: There is no pay for this position. It is a volunteer position.

Other Qualifications

Satisfactory criminal records check, pre-hire and annually thereafter, if applicable. Must be eligible to work in the United States and provide work authorization. Occasional travel to KIPP Memphis campuses may be required as needed.

ADA Requirements
  • Prolonged periods standing and actively monitoring student behavior while teaching
  • Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times
  • Must be able to traverse classroom and adjust height, by bending or leaning, in order to teach each child
  • Must be able to facilitate classroom transitions by walking through hallways and up and down stairs with students
