Overview

The Lt. Col. Luke Weathers - Jr.

- VAMC in Memphis - TN is recruiting for a Hospitalist to serve as a full-time Specialty Care physician. The position is accountable to the Chief of Specialty Care for assuring the most effective delivery of state-of-the-art care by meeting or exceeding compliance standards.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, you must meet the basic requirements as well as any additional requirements (if applicable) listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending the completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Currently employed physician(s) in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation.

Requirements
  • United States Citizenship:
    Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy
  • Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine
  • The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed
  • Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia
  • Residency Training:
    Physicians must have completed residency training, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification
  • Approved residencies: (1) ACGME; (2) AOA; or (3) other residencies followed by a minimum of five years of verified practice in the United States, as deemed appropriate by the local Medical Staff Executive Committee
  • Residents currently enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited residency training programs and who would otherwise meet the basic requirements for appointment are eligible to be appointed as "Physician Resident Providers" (PRPs)
  • PRPs must be fully licensed physicians and may only be appointed on an intermittent or fee-basis
  • PRPs are not considered independent practitioners and will not be privileged; they have a defined scope of practice with certain restricted duties under supervision
  • Additionally, surgery residents in gap years may also be appointed as PRPs

Duties
  • General duties include supervision, training, and teaching of the University of Tennessee Health Science Center and other affiliate General Internal Medicine house staff and students
  • All applicants assigned must meet the qualifications for working on the Teaching Services (must be eligible for UT faculty appointment)
  • Responsible for inpatient care and follow-up for patients admitted to the General Medicine units of the Memphis Veterans Affairs Medical Center (VAMC)
  • Responsible for medical consultation to inpatients admitted to other services at Memphis VAMC, including consultation services on the inpatient psychiatry and substance abuse residential treatment units
  • Additional clinical responsibilities can include perioperative outpatient clinic overseeing medical students and residents
  • Clinical duties may be indicated in any area that the medicine hospitalist team is needed to provide quality care to our Veterans
  • Administrative and committee responsibilities as assigned, including case peer reviews, physician utilization management advisors, and select essential committees
  • Lead and manage the team of General Medicine fellows, residents, medical students, Pharmacists, Mid-Level Providers, etc. on inpatient service or in a clinical setting
  • Ensure appropriate care, promotion of health, education, counseling of family members, and control of risk factors for all General Medicine patients
  • Ensure timely and efficient discharge of General Medicine in-patients on teaching or non-teaching services and ensure appropriate follow-up with a specialty clinic and/or with primary care
  • Provide medical evaluation and direct the overall management of acutely ill hospitalised patients with general medical problems on teaching or non-teaching services (no Intensive Care Unit care patients)
  • Ensure that treatment is safe, timely, efficient, productive, evidence-based, and patient-centered
