Job OverviewRespiratory therapists set up various types of equipment to administer prescribed doses of medicinal gases and aerosolized drugs. Therapists administer all types of therapy including gas therapy, aerosol therapy, ventilatory assistance, and cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
Minimum Qualifications- Associate’s degree from an accredited Respiratory Care program.
- Licensed by the state of Massachusetts to provide respiratory care.
- Certified Respiratory Therapist (CRT) or Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT).
- Two (2) years of experience as a Respiratory Therapist.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
- Assess and deliver therapeutic and diagnostic pulmonary care to patients of all ages in inpatient, outpatient, and sub‑acute settings.
- Administer and document all procedures in accordance with department policy and procedure. Suggest appropriate therapy and communicate suggestions effectively to physicians and nurses.
- Comply fully with department policy and procedure in maintenance and operation of the blood gas machines and in the drawing and analyzing of samples.
- Administer adult and geriatric ventilator care, aerosol therapy, medical gas therapy and bronchial hygiene therapy to all age groups per physician orders and departmental policy.
- Perform oral, naso‑tracheal, endotracheal, and tracheal suctioning as needed per departmental policy.
- In Special Care Nursery, administer and document all procedures in accordance with department policy and procedure. Suggest appropriate therapy and communicate suggestions effectively to physicians and nurses.
- Perform oximetry according to policy and recognize inaccurate results.
- Prioritize by planning and organizing time effectively; assume additional responsibility and respond to stabilize a crisis situation.
- Check equipment and materials prior to workday, ensuring proper working order and sufficient supplies.
- Formulate care plan with input from patient and families when appropriate.
- Establish measurement goals and communicate this information to the healthcare team.
- Document all therapies accurately and completely in the medical record.
- Use good judgment when interfacing with other staff and exercise tactful communication skills.
- Use strong decision‑making skills based on clinical observations and protocol. Seek appropriate advice when situations are unclear or in question.
- Assess potential discharge needs during hospitalization.
- Recognize that patient and family teaching are an integral part of professional care and carry this out routinely and with appropriate documentation.
- Accept and utilize direction and supervision positively; demonstrate flexibility in being cross‑trained within the department.
- Complete forms, records, chart entries accurately and on time.
- Inform supervisor of pertinent activities and problems, passing on job-related information.
- Rotate on day, evening, and night tours of duty.
