Job Profile Summary

This role focuses on providing professional and nonprofessional nursing care services in accordance with physician orders. It includes basic care services to patients, under the direction of physicians, mid-level practitioners, and possibly registered nurses, depending on the unit. The position is entry‑level, often requiring vocational or technical education and close supervision. Responsibilities also involve routine work that follows standard procedures and requires minimal interpretation or explanation.

Job Overview

Under the direction and supervision of clinical staff, this position provides continuous observation and surveillance of at‑risk patients. The aide supports clinical staff by identifying risky behaviors, verbally redirecting patients, summoning staff when necessary, and handling emergencies appropriately.

Job Description

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Nursing Assistant (CNA), Medical Assistant (MA), or Emergency Medical System (EMS) certification.
  • Previous patient care experience in a hospital or nursing home.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Observe patients at all times to ensure safety, including ADLs such as feeding, toileting, and ambulation.
  • Provide care based on the individualized treatment plan delegated by clinical staff.
  • Explains care to patients as needed without counseling or providing opinions. Use a 2‑way audio device in the patient room as directed.
  • Collaboratively identify and report patient safety issues, and seek assistance promptly when a patient poses a threat.
  • Accompany patients off‑unit to scheduled appointments or tests.
  • Document behaviors and events per hospital policy, using paper or electronic records.
  • Report all non‑functioning equipment and comply with infection control protocols.
  • Interact with the health‑care team regarding implementation of the care plan.
  • Accept assignments positively and resolve issues maturely.
  • Promote open communication with nursing staff for a positive work environment.
  • Behave kindly and courteously toward patients, families, and staff.
  • Follow safety rules, prevent unsafe conditions, and participate in safety programs.
  • Establish a climate for optimal patient care and professional development.
  • Maintain attendance standards, including punctuality and adequate coverage during breaks.
  • Participate in hand‑off of pertinent information about assigned patients at shift change.
  • Adhere to unit‑specific dress code.
  • Initiate troubleshooting for software, hardware, or server issues.
  • Recognize the ethical and legal limitations of practice.

Physical Requirements:

  • Prolonged standing/walking.
  • Lift, reposition, push, or transfer patients & equipment of 5‑10 lbs.
  • Reaches, stoops, bends, kneels, or crouches as needed.
  • Frequent exposure to hazardous chemicals, sick patients, bodily substances, noise, and radiation or electrical hazards.
  • Regular exposure to blood‑borne diseases and other transmissible infections.
  • Contact with patients in varied circumstances.
  • Adjustment to unpredictable situations.
  • Manual dexterity for fine hand manipulations and computer use.
  • Ability to hear instructions from clinical staff.

  • Use good telephone etiquette.
  • Follow verbal and written instructions.
  • Identify task scope and perform efficiently.
  • Observe patients according to safety aide guidelines.

  • Know and implement Code White procedures and responsibilities.
