Job Profile SummaryThis role focuses on using various imaging techniques and practices to aid in the diagnosis and treatment of patients. The tasks include utilizing radiation detection to examine internal organ function and structure. The technologist has specialized knowledge or skills gained through vocational education, training, and experience, usually in patient care or scientific/laboratory jobs. The role requires basic knowledge of job procedures and tools, obtained through work experience and education.
Works under moderate supervision, solving routine problems, and may sometimes require interpretation or deviation from standard procedures. The technologist communicates information that requires some explanation or interpretation.
Under the direction of clinicians, performs technical aspects, stress tests, and routine tests or patient procedures in the Nuclear Medicine Department. Demonstrates understanding of scientific principles and safe work practices. Complies with JCAHO, federal and state licensing, and other regulatory requirements. Responsible for maintaining ALARA and required documentation for the Nuclear Medicine radiation safety program.
Minimum Qualifications- Graduate of an accredited Nuclear Medicine or Radiological Technologist program.
- American Registry of Radiological Technologist (ARRT) or Nuclear Medicine Technology Certification (NMTCB).
- One (1) year of experience as a Nuclear Medical Technologist.
- Nuclear Medicine Technologist License.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification.
- Two (2) years of experience as a Nuclear Medical Technologist.
- Schedules patients for efficient patient flow. Checks patient records upon arrival to ensure completeness of data and verifies whether examination medications have been given.
- Following physicians' orders, prepares and calibrates radio pharmaceuticals and injects patients, using a Technetium generator and other radio nuclides, a dose calibrator, and manual calculations. Sets up and maintains accurate records of amount and types of radioactivity given to patient. Positions patient relative to equipment and adjusts controls as necessary. Ensures correct images are taken on the computer by giving the correct commands, and brings images to the Radiologist for interpretation.
Maintains accurate records conforming to NRC regulations. - Conducts proper quality control procedures on radiopharmaceuticals and on the Gamma Camera and calibrator. Regularly cleans and maintains nuclear medicine equipment, reporting any malfunctions promptly.
- Uses proper technique when working with radioactive material to keep exposure to patients, self, and others to a minimum. Performs quality control procedures as required and maintains proper records.
- Performs radiologic examinations and related department duties as requested.
- Delivers competent care to patients across all ages, with an emphasis on geriatric patients.
- Keeps abreast of changes and new developments in Nuclear Medicine by reviewing journals, attending educational courses, seminars, and professional meetings.
- Participates as a member of the Radiation Safety Committee.
- Frequent standing, occasional sitting, walking, and lifting 30-35 lbs.
- Requires manual dexterity using fine hand manipulation to operate radiology equipment.
- Hearing and visual acuity sufficient to perform examinations; observe patients, read monitors and documents, and hear audible equipment alarms.
- Knowledge of medical terminology.
