OverviewThe Medication Safety Officer (MSO), under the direction of the Vice President of Pharmacy Services, is responsible for the comprehensive oversight of quality, compliance, and medication safety activities within Health First’s Hospital Division. The MSO fosters cross-functional and system-wide relationships beyond the Inpatient Pharmacy department and collaborates to develop, implement, and grow pharmacy quality, compliance, and medication safety initiatives. The MSO supports the creation and administration of a comprehensive program to improve clinical outcomes, reduce organizational risk, and minimize patient harm.
Responsibilities- Works with the leadership and applicable teams across the Integrated Delivery Network (IDN) to coordinate outcomes review and department projects as assigned to meet regulatory standards (e.g., The Joint Commission, Department of Health) as well as system and departmental projects and initiatives.
- Assists Inpatient Pharmacy leadership with major survey preparation (e.g., Joint Commission, DOH Licensure, URAC) and helps develop plans of correction, implementation strategies, and ongoing oversight.
- Supports the coordination and facilitation of performance improvement programs within inpatient Pharmacy across the Hospital Division, including monitoring statistical analysis and reporting and developing action plans.
- Identifies trends for actual or potential Quality and Safety improvement opportunities based on data review/analysis and participates in designing and implementing improvements.
- Oversees the development, revision, and auditing of departmental policies and procedures related to compliance, accreditation, and performance improvement processes.
- Aids in developing and revising the Pharmacy Corporate Compliance Plan in conjunction with the Hospital Division Ancillary Department Billing and General Compliance Committee.
- Creates and maintains standards, operational activities, and performance measurement tools that meet operational and market needs in quality improvement, compliance, and medication safety.
- Coordinates and implements initiatives for the Pharmacy medication safety plan with communities and tertiary hospital(s) patient safety committees to ensure safe medication management within the pharmacy and other ancillary departments; serves as the chair of the Medication Safety Subcommittees.
- Contributes to process improvement efforts designed to reduce medication errors, improve patient safety, and promote best medication-use practices system-wide; oversees adverse drug reaction reporting activities.
- Collaborates with leadership to support the implementation and administration of medication safety initiatives.
- Reviews sources of new and revised medication safety guidelines and determines applicability to the system and each entity, develops policies to ensure compliance, and educates stakeholders at the corporate and entity levels on changes implemented.
- Manages data reporting and information related to all aspects of quality and medication safety.
- Education:
Bachelor’s degree in Pharmacy. - Work Experience:
Seven (7) years’ progressive experience within the inpatient pharmacy setting. - Licensure:
Pharmacist licensure in the State of Florida. - Certification:
None - Skills/Knowledge/Abilities:
- Proficient in Microsoft Office – Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint.
- Ability to coach and mentor other pharmacy associates on regulatory standards and best practices.
- Thorough understanding of regulatory standards (e.g., The Joint Commission, Department of Health) as well as system and departmental projects and initiatives.
- Education:
Doctorate’s degree in Pharmacy (Pharm
D).
- Majority of time involves sitting or standing; occasional walking, bending, and stooping.
- Long periods of computer time or at workstation.
- Light work that may include lifting or moving objects up to 20 pounds with or without assistance.
