Join our Municipal Works team in a professional engineering role that plays a key part in planning, designing, and delivering municipal infrastructure projects that support a growing and vibrant community. As a Municipal Engineer II, you'll provide technical expertise across transportation, stormwater, and municipal servicing projects, contributing to safe, sustainable, and cost-effective infrastructure solutions for Medicine Hat.

This position is ideal for a professional engineer who is ready to take on greater responsibility, manage projects from concept to completion, and collaborate with internal teams, consultants, contractors, and community partners. Your work will directly influence how infrastructure is planned, built, and maintained across the city.

The Municipal Engineer II position is on-site in Medicine Hat, Alberta. Relocation assistance is available for the successful candidate. Your key responsibilities

  • Plan, design, and manage projects related to transportation and stormwater infrastructure.
  • Prepare engineering designs, drawings, specifications, and cost estimates in accordance with municipal standards and best practices.
  • Manage assigned capital and operational projects, including scope, schedule, budget, and quality control.
  • Review and approve engineering submissions, technical reports, and construction drawings prepared by consultants and developers.
  • Provide technical guidance and support to construction activities, including site inspections, contract administration, and issue resolution.
  • Conduct engineering assessments, investigations, and data analysis to support infrastructure planning and asset management decisions.
  • Coordinate with internal teams, external consultants, contractors, and regulatory agencies to deliver projects successfully.
  • Prepare clear and professional technical reports, recommendations, and correspondence.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable legislation, municipal bylaws, engineering standards, and safety requirements.
  • Support continuous improvement of engineering processes, standards, and practices within Municipal Works.

What you bring

  • Strong technical knowledge of municipal engineering principles, particularly in transportation and stormwater infrastructure.
  • Proven project management skills, with the ability to manage multiple projects and priorities simultaneously.
  • Sound judgment and problem-solving skills to address complex engineering and construction challenges.
  • Ability to work independently while also collaborating effectively within multidisciplinary teams.
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to explain technical concepts clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • A detail-oriented approach with a commitment to quality, safety, and accountability.
  • Adaptability and professionalism when working in a dynamic municipal environment.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering (preferably Municipal Major) or a related engineering discipline.
  • Five (5) years of professional engineering experience in project and program management, preferably within a municipal environment. Candidates with fewer years of experience and relevant municipal or infrastructure experience may also be considered.
  • Registered as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) with APEGA
  • Several years of progressively responsible experience in municipal engineering or related infrastructure work.
  • Experience with design software, engineering standards, and municipal infrastructure systems is considered an asset.
  • Valid Alberta Class 5 driver's license with an acceptable driving record.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
