Join the City of Medicine Hat as an Archives & Education Assistant

Temporary (16 Week Term), Full time, On Site

The City of Medicine Hat is looking for a dedicated and detail-oriented Archives & Education Assistant to support archival organization and preservation. This temporary position offers an excellent opportunity to gain hands-on experience in archival work, working both with historical records and digital environments.

As part of the team, you'll assist in improving public access to historical records through digitization and populating our online catalogue, assisting staff and the public with research, and performing preventative conservation. If you're looking to develop your skills in a professional setting while contributing to the preservation of local history, this role is a great fit.

Your key responsibilities

  • Determine the status of digitized records, working with the Archivist to determine priorities for digitization.
  • Digitize records (primarily paper and photo) and linking them the Archives catalogue.
  • Update databases, tracking availability of digital records.
  • Support reference services and provide information on archival materials.

What you bring

  • Strong organizational and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent written communication skills.
  • Experience in digital environments, including databases, Microsoft 365, scanners, and Photoshop Elements.
  • Knowledge of archival practices and community history.
  • Teamwork mindset with the ability to work independently when needed.

Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled in Museum Studies, Archives, Education, Library Science, or Canadian History from a recognized post-secondary institution.
  • Available to work a full-time schedule from May 4 to August 21, 2026.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
