Position PurposeThe Hospital Medical Leader leads the hospital veterinary team in providing excellent veterinary care to Vetco Total Care patients while offering phenomenal customer care to their owners. The Leader represents Petco’s mission and commitments to all clients, veterinarians, and partners.
Essential Job Functions- Leadership/Management duties:
- Lead the hospital veterinarian team.
- Partner with the Hospital Office Manager to provide cohesive and collaborative leadership to the entire hospital team.
Mentor and coach veterinarians to drive continuous improvement in clinical skills, client communication, team collaboration, and standard of care. - Hold responsibility for driving hospital commitment to medical quality and compliance with Petco Medical SOPs.
- Maintain strict compliance with state practice act requirements for full‑service veterinary hospitals.
- Conduct veterinarian candidate interviewing, onboarding, and partner with field leadership on hiring.
- Create and maintain veterinarian schedules, identify gaps, and correct with Hospital Office Manager.
- Monitor hospital performance, identify opportunities, and partner to drive business results through quality of care and client communication.
- Review P&L monthly reporting and partner to increase revenue growth and exceed financial targets.
- Conduct regular review of hospital electronic medical records and provide feedback to elevate patient care.
- Ensure swift resolution of client concerns and reportable incidents in partnership with Hospital Office Manager.
- Maintain ordering, inventory, recording, and reporting of all controlled substances; keep hospital compliant with DEA regulations.
- Promote a strong culture of safety for team, clients, and patients.
- Partner with Hospital Office Manager for hospital radiation safety training and compliance.
- Clinical Care duties:
- Provide patient care by performing physical examinations, diagnosing and treating diseases, and providing preventive care according to patient signalment, lifestyle, and environment.
- Utilize a problem‑based approach that includes developing a complete problem list, differential diagnoses, diagnostic plan, and appropriate treatments.
- Document all patient observations, examinations, diagnostics, treatments, medications, client interactions, and diagnoses in a concise, detailed medical record.
- Perform routine and complex surgical procedures (spays/neuters, exploratory laparotomies, mass removals).
- Perform routine and complex dental procedures (full dental exam, radiograph evaluation, extractions, and oral surgeries).
- Develop treatment plans for patients undergoing daytime hospitalization, transition to overnight care as needed, and communicate effectively with referral hospitals and clients.

Duties and Responsibilities:- Participate in rounds as incoming or exiting doctor at shift beginning and end.
- Disseminate knowledge to improve care and communication across the hospital team.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
- Hold and maintain any required state premise permits or hospital vendor accounts as needed.
- Doctor of Veterinary Medicine or equivalent from an AVMA‑accredited school.
- 1–3 years of clinical veterinary experience.
- Experience mentoring and coaching veterinarians (preferred).
- Active, uncontingent veterinary license in the hospital state, or ability to obtain by start date.
- Current DEA and Controlled Substance licenses.
- USDA Category I accreditation (or completion within two months of hire).
- Strong anesthesia and routine surgical skills (spays/neuters, mass removals, dental cleanings).
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Compassionate, professional demeanor during stressful situations.
- Team player willing to learn new techniques and accept change.
Job duties are conducted in a vet‑hospital setting. Requires bending, kneeling, lifting up to 30 lb., and standing for long periods. Direct contact with clients and pets is frequent.
