This Position reports to:
R&D Department/Local Unit Lead
Join our R&D team and lead the development of next-generation medium voltage switch gear solutions. As a Senior R&D Engineer, you will transform complex engineering challenges into innovative products that improve power distribution safety, efficiency, and reliability. Working alongside the factory, you will drive projects from concept through prototyping to production, creating technology that makes a real difference in how industries access and manage electrical power.
You will also mentor junior engineers, drive innovation in product design, and collaborate with global teams to deliver solutions that set industry benchmarks.
The work model for this role is:
Onsite.
This role is contributing to the ABB Electrification Distribution Solutions division at the North American Technology Center in Mebane, NC.
Key Responsibilities- Lead the development of new product designs (Mechanical/Electrical), cost optimization initiatives, and design enhancements to maintain technology leadership in alignment with the company's strategic objectives.
- Collaborate closely with Product Managers, Project Managers, and R&D Engineers throughout the product development life cycle to ensure customer feedback is effectively integrated into design solutions.
- Validate product robustness using simulations, analytical methods, and physical testing.
- Organize and conduct design reviews, evaluating concepts for technical feasibility and cost-effectiveness.
- Review and assess test plans and results to ensure product performance and compliance with ANSI/IEEE and CSA standards.
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Engineering (Mechanical or Electrical preferred).
- Minimum 5 years of R&D experience in the electrical power equipment industry required.
- Experience in the mechanical design of Low or Medium Voltage ANSI switch gear, Motor Control Centers, or similar complex electrical/mechanical equipment.
- Knowledge and application of relevant industry standards. (ANSI, IEEE, NEMA, and UL.)
- Direct experience with executing type tests at internal and external laboratories.
- Working knowledge of simulation software (Dielectric, thermal, structural) desired.
- Proficiency in 3D CAD and PLM tools-Solid Works or Creo with Windchill preferred.
- Candidates must already have work authorization that would permit them to work for ABB in the US.
