Department SummaryOur AI‑enhanced Discovery and Decisions department seeks an experienced AI and Decision Engineer with expertise in machine learning, large language models, and related technical areas.
- Apply large language models to sponsors’ decision‑making challenges.
- Design, develop, evaluate, and field AI solutions for mission‑critical decisions.
- Identify and lead new R&D opportunities to strengthen national AI capabilities.
- Work in cross‑functional teams to develop and implement AI‑enhanced decision systems using LLM technology.
- Apply modern AI and engineering techniques to build decision‑support software prototypes based on workflow analysis.
- Propose and execute cutting‑edge research in AI‑enhanced decision systems.
- Evaluate AI solutions against sponsor requirements and provide actionable recommendations.
- Lead projects or small teams solving complex decision problems.
- Minimum of 5 years related experience with a Bachelor’s degree in computer science or related field; or 3 years with Master’s; or PhD with relevant experience.
- Hands‑on experience with machine learning (deep learning, reinforcement learning) and at least one of: LLM, generative/agentic AI, decision science, human‑machine teaming, cognitive science, AI testing, multi‑agent systems, knowledge reasoning, automated planning, semantics, ontologies.
- Ability to articulate high‑stakes decision‑making challenges and identify gaps.
- Ability to learn new technologies independently.
- Experience with C++ and Python programming.
- Must obtain and maintain a U.S. government DoD Secret clearance.
- Requires at least 50% hybrid on‑site.
- Recent experience with large language models.
- Experience with testing and evaluation of AI systems, explainable AI, or strategic AI adoption.
- Hands‑on experience deploying AI‑enhanced decision system prototypes.
- Interest in rapidly addressing new problems across domains.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Active DoD Secret clearance.
Candidate must have or obtain within one year the following clearance:
Secret.
$143,600 – $179,500 – $215,400 annual.
