Title: MS SQL Database Administrator
Locations: McLean, VA OR Plano, TX (locals only, onsite interview, onsite 5 days per week)
Duration: 6+ Months with possible extension thereafter

Candidates must have deep knowledge of cloud formation and hands‑on experience with cloud migration.
Intake Call Notes- Role:
Senior Database Administrator (Contract) - Locations:
McLean, VA or Plano, TX (On‑site Mon‑Fri) - Must‑have:
End‑to‑end on‑prem SQL Server to AWS RDS migration experience - Experience:
- 10+ years SQL Server
- 5+ years cloud migration (AWS preferred)
- Candidates without SQL? AWS migration experience will not be considered
- Open to candidates on sponsorship (contract‑only role)
- Lead feasibility studies for applications
- Set up AWS environments and access
- Migrate SQL Server instances from on‑prem to AWS RDS (application‑by‑application)
- Existing backup/monitoring scripts already in place; no need to recreate on‑prem processes
- Some after‑hours work for critical migrations (minimal, scheduled)
- SQL Server, AWS RDS
- Infrastructure as Code:
Terraform OR Cloud Formation (either is acceptable) - Power Shell preferred;
Python/other scripting is a plus
Team: Database Engineering under Platform Infrastructure & Networking Services (PINS)
Job Details- Client is seeking a skilled and experienced MSSQL Database Administrator with proven expertise in cloud migration projects.
- The ideal candidate will manage, maintain, and optimize client’s Microsoft SQL Server environments, while also leading or supporting the migration of database workloads to cloud platforms (such as Azure, AWS, or Google Cloud).
- This role requires strong technical skills, problem‑solving abilities, and experience with both on‑premises and cloud‑based database solutions.
- Install, configure, upgrade, and patch Microsoft SQL Server instances
- Monitor database performance, tune queries, and optimize indexes
- Implement and maintain high availability and disaster recovery solutions (e.g., Always On, Log Shipping, Replication)
- Perform regular backups and restores; ensure data integrity and security
- Manage users, roles, and permissions following best practices
- Assess existing on‑premises SQL Server environments and plan cloud migration strategies
- Execute migrations to cloud platforms (preferably Azure SQL Database, Managed Instance, or AWS RDS)
- Use migration tools such as Data Migration Assistant (DMA), Azure Database Migration Service (DMS), or equivalent
- Test and validate data integrity and application performance post‑migration
- Optimize cloud database resources for cost, performance, and scalability
- Develop and maintain scripts for automation of routine tasks using Power Shell, TSQL, or cloud‑native tools
- Monitor and automate alerts, reports, and maintenance jobs
- Create and maintain detailed documentation of database architecture, configurations, and migration processes
- Provide technical support for application and development teams
- Troubleshoot and resolve database‑related incidents and service requests
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field (or equivalent experience)
- 10 plus years of experience as an MSSQL Server DBA
- Hands‑on experience with at least one major cloud platform (Azure, AWS, or Google Cloud)
- Proven experience in database migrations from on‑premises to cloud
- Strong knowledge of database security, backup/recovery, and performance tuning
- Proficiency in TSQL and Power Shell scripting
- Experience with cloud‑native database monitoring and management tools
- Excellent communication and documentation skills
- Relevant certifications (e.g., Microsoft Certified: Azure Database Administrator Associate) are a plus
- Experience with hybrid and multicloud environments
- Familiarity with Infrastructure as Code (IaC) tools (e.g., ARM templates, Terraform)
- Knowledge of Dev Ops practices and CI/CD pipelines for database deployments
- Experience with other RDBMS (e.g., Oracle, Postgre
SQL) is a plus
- Candidate must have 10 plus years of experience using Cloud and SQL with 2 plus years of experience migrating from on‑prem to AWS
On‑site. May require after‑hours support for critical incidents or migrations.
