Upper School Mathematics Teacher; Proactive Search

The Potomac School Math Department seeks candidates for a full-time Upper School Math Teacher opening for the 2026-27 school year. This position reports to the Head of the Upper School and is responsible for teaching four classes as well as advising a group of Upper School students.

• Inspire a love of mathematics in students by teaching four sections of courses offered in the Upper School curriculum (Algebra 1 through Calculus).
• Build relationships with students via the classroom and an advisory.
• Plan, prepare, and deliver lessons that use an inquiry-based model to promote problem-solving habits, observation and discovery, and student-led generation of understanding.
• Facilitate active, student-centered learning using various teaching methods such as cooperative problem solving, group discussions and occasional lectures.
• Collaborate actively with math department colleagues, especially on curriculum development, assessment, course planning and alignment, and course content progression within the scope and sequence of the math program.
• Work with students to encourage and facilitate each individual’s growth.
• Teach the assigned curriculum, evaluate students’ progress, and inform families of that progress.
• Keep attendance records; manage student behavior in the classroom and maintain a positive educational environment for all students.
• Meet with families as needed to discuss student progress and challenges.
• Participate in faculty and professional meetings, educational conferences, and other teacher training workshops.
• Demonstrate personal leadership qualities to inspire student learning, including understanding of the characteristics of the age group taught.
• Work in an organized, dependable, patient, and creative manner.
• Advise a group of Upper School students by developing meaningful relationships with them and supporting their academic and social-emotional growth.
• Perform all other duties as assigned.

• Bachelor’s Degree required, preferably in mathematics or a closely related field, and preferably with previous experience teaching mathematics at the Upper School level.
• Ability to communicate, motivate, and understand the students’ educational and emotional needs.
• Ability to work cooperatively and communicate effectively with other teachers, support staff, parents and members of the community.
• Ability to recognize and respond to individual and cultural differences in students and use different teaching methods that inspire high student engagement and achievement.
• Enthusiasm and joy for working with students.
