Job Description

Collin County is seeking exceptional candidates for the position of Autopsy Tech. Autopsy Tech performs under the direct supervision of the Medical Examiner, the Autopsy Technician will be responsible for assisting with all aspects of the autopsy room operations to include:

Responsibilities
  • Setting up for cases of the day and providing administrative and clerical support as instructed.
  • Preparing body for post-mortem examination by bringing bodies into autopsy room, lifting onto work area, removing clothing and jewelry, and cleaning body.
  • Assisting with autopsies by preparing, rolling and lifting body as needed to ensure thorough examination, evisceration of organs, fingerprinting decedents, and suturing and cleaning the body upon completion of autopsy.
  • Taking photographs, evidence and specimen collection, and x-raying the bodies.
  • Maintaining an organized and fully stocked autopsy area by ensuring all instruments are readily available prior to each examination, cleaning surgical equipment, instruments, trays, coolers, and other supplies and work areas, monitoring inventory of supplies in autopsy room, and ordering new supplies, as needed.
  • Preparing bodies for release and coordinating with funeral homes for body release.
  • Preserving the decedent’s clothing and personal property until released to family and collecting and storing evidenced removed from bodies during autopsy.
  • Performing related duties such as labeling, storing and transporting specimens, data entry, and other duties as needed.
  • Handling the annual discarding of certain tissues, and being responsible for knowing the time frame that certain specimen must be kept.
  • Testifying in a court of law, when required, regarding procedures of handling, inventory, and maintenance of decedents, evidence and/or property held in custody.
  • Performing other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalency required.
  • Associate's degree or Bachelor’s degree with emphasis on the medical sciences such as chemistry or biology is preferred.
  • Two years of experience in a medical or laboratory environment, AND vocational/technical education and training in a medical field; OR, any combination of education and experience that has been achieved and is equivalent to the stated education and experience requirements and the knowledge, skills, and abilities sufficient to successfully perform the duties and responsibilities of the job.
  • Education and experience in a medical field with a proficiency in human anatomy and ability to read simple medical terminology preferred.
  • Candidates must possess and maintain a valid Texas Operator's Driver's License with an acceptable driving record.
