Job Details

This position is for a Certified Scrub Tech responsible for preparing operating rooms, assisting surgeons, maintaining sterile environment, performing inventory, and adhering to hospital policies.

Qualifications
  • High school graduate or equivalent
  • Current certification as a Surgical Technologist
  • Minimum of two years' work experience as a CST at an acute care or rural hospital
  • BLS current at time of hire
Responsibilities
  • Prepare operating rooms by setting up surgical instruments, sterile supplies and equipment.
  • Ensure all surgical equipment/instrumentation is sterilized and functioning properly prior to presentation to sterile field and use.
  • Assist surgeons during operations by passing instruments and supplies, providing retraction, improving visual field, and other duties as delegated within the scope of the CST.
  • Maintain a sterile environment through adherence to sterile/aseptic technique to minimize risk of infection per national standards and hospital policies.
  • Monitor and account for all surgical tools and supplies throughout the procedure; consistently participate in surgical counts at appropriate times.
  • Help position patients for surgery as needed.
  • Perform surgical hand scrub/cleaning and don sterile gloves per gowning and gloving policy; maintain proper sterile technique when gowning and gloving surgeon and draping patient.
  • Assist with application of sterile drapes.
  • Prepare and manage specimens on the sterile field.
  • Anticipate the needs of the surgical team and respond promptly.
  • Assist in the application of dressings and safe transfer of patients to stretcher.
  • Perform inventory checks and restock operating room supplies as needed.
  • Properly dispose of biohazardous or pathological waste per facility protocol.
  • Participate in room turnover and housekeeping duties as needed; return unused supplies, instruments and equipment at end of day; participate in departmental restocking duties.
  • Comply with hospital policy and procedures.
  • Consistently participate in time‑out procedure, confirm site marking prior to incision.
  • Maintain patient confidentiality.
  • Participate in facility cost‑saving initiatives.
  • Participate in case‑pulling duties to prepare for upcoming cases by close attention to surgeon preference cards.
  • Transport instruments to decontamination area using appropriate technique in compliance with established policies and procedures.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of instrument decontamination, assembly, packaging and sterilization.
  • Adhere to attendance, punctuality, meal and break time period policies.
  • Attend departmental meetings or document review of materials presented.
  • Report unsafe situations to supervisor and through electronic variance system as needed.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of and participation in hospital performance improvement, infection control and risk management programs.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of cultural, spiritual and age‑related considerations when interacting with patients and coworkers.
Physical Demands
  • Representative of essential functions; reasonable accommodations possible.
  • Frequently required to sit, converse, listen; touch, handle, feel objects, tools or controls; reach with hands and arms. Requires close vision and ability to adjust focus.
  • Must lift/carry over 25 pounds and push/pull over 25 pounds regularly.
  • Must stand and/or walk at least five hours per day.
