Pet Smart’s Pet Stylist in Training is responsible for engaging with pet parents and their pets while providing positive experiences and best in class salon services. This position will receive training and guidance from experienced Professional Styling teams, learning proper grooming techniques. This role upholds the company’s vision, mission, values, and strategy and shares responsibility for store cleanliness, recommending solutions for pet parents, and pet safety standards.
The Pet Stylist in Training role is obtained after successfully completing the Pet Smart Grooming Academy.
Job responsibilities include, but are not limited to, and may vary by store characteristics and needs:
- Under supervision, perform full menu of bath, brush and grooming services and standalone services such as nail trims, teeth brushing, and sanitary services per Pet Smart bathing standards and procedures.
- Develop and display safe technical skills that meet or exceed the company’s minimum expectations.
- Recommend additional health and wellness solutions to pet parents based on the pet’s needs.
- Ensure a positive pet parent experience and outcomes in person, over the phone, and at the sales register.
- Greet pet parents, answer questions, and assist with making salon reservations.
- Conduct salon appointment reminder calls, maintain client records, and consult with pet parents on services offered.
- Perform check-in and check-out procedures for grooming appointments, including applicable paperwork and rebooking.
- Promote opportunities to grow salon sales to help achieve sales targets and productivity, and track salon metrics.
- Recommend, inform, and sell merchandise and services.
- Maintain the highest level of cleanliness, sanitation, and humane conditions for all pets in the grooming area; perform maintenance throughout the day and end-of-day cleaning per the maintenance checklist.
- Take immediate action if a pet is identified as sick or injured and transport to the vet as needed.
- Assist and work in other departments as required. Other duties may be assigned.

- Follow all Company Policies and Procedures.
- Successful completion of Pet Smart’s Salon Academy training and safety certification program.
- Prior grooming experience preferred; may be asked to complete a technical exam.
- Proficiency in computer applications.
- Ability to react under pressure and maintain composure.
- Flexibility in schedule, able to work evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail and safety measures.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Stand, walk, climb a ladder, and use hands to handle, feel, hold, write, etc. May reach with hands and arms; may stoop, kneel, crouch, talk and hear. Specific vision abilities required; reasonable accommodations may be made for disabilities.
- Frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally team lift and/or move more than 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required; depth perception.
- Occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts, a wet environment with pet hair, and varying noise levels. Exposure to live animals is common.
