Description
The McHenry Public Library District is looking for an on-site Adult Services Librarian. This position is responsible for providing excellent public service and outreach to over 40,000 residents. Responsibilities include collection development, assisting with library services, conducting reference interviews, and providing readers’ advisory and programming for adult patrons of all ages. The role also offers ample opportunities to attend engaging continuing education and community events.
The salary for this position ranges between $20.11 and $25.13 per hour, based on qualifications and organizational equity.
Requirement: Has a Master of Library Science (MLS) or Master of Library and Information Science (MLIS) degree (or equivalent education and relevant public library experience).
Schedule: This position includes most daytime hours, including morning and afternoon shifts, with evenings as needed and weekends on a rotating basis.

Summary:
Under the supervision of the Adult Services Manager, provides reference, readers’ advisory, and technology assistance and instruction services for patrons of all ages. Participates in collection development and assisting in the evaluation of the adult
collection. Contributes to the planning and implementation of programs and services to adult patrons. The Adult Services Manager will assign specific responsibilities/functions based on experience, skills, and the department’s specific needs.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following:
- Performs all aspects of a Library Associate position.
- Participates in the development of the adult collections by selecting, weeding, and assisting in the evaluation of the adult collections for balance and comprehensiveness.
- Performs complex searches in multiple databases.
- Provides a broad range of professional library services, including reference and readers’ advisory services.
- Assists in training new staff members within the department.
- Attends appropriate professional meetings at the local, state, and national levels and seeks opportunities to improve and enhance library services.
- Curates content, including digital resources and special collections, to meet adult patron needs and interests.
- May participate in the development of departmental and/or library budgets.
- May be responsible for administering one or more budget items.
- May create content for the library's website and social media channels/networking sites and maintain these platforms.
- May communicate and cooperate with assisted living facilities, local community organizations that serve the adult community, institutions of higher education, and local businesses.
- Assumes other duties and projects as assigned.
Qualifications:
- MLS (MLIS) degree required (or equivalent education and relevant public library experience).
- 2+ years of library experience is preferred
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Proficient technology skills, including:
Microsoft Windows and Office applications, Google Suite applications, Internet, eReaders/tablets, online video conferencing/sharing platforms, and the ability to adapt to changing technology. - Knowledge of and commitment to high-quality reference and readers’ advisory practices and a demonstrated commitment to excellence in customer service.
- A comprehensive understanding of the recreational and educational needs of today’s adult community.
- Experience with automated library circulation and bibliographic systems (ILS) and OCLC.
- Knowledge of current, popular reading, viewing, and listening interests of the population served.
- Flexible and adaptable to new experiences, concepts, and technology.
- Able to complete detailed work accurately, efficiently, and on time with minimal supervision.
- Able to work independently or as a team member.
- Familiarity with a broad range of professional library services and library trends.
- Ability to plan, organize, and prioritize work assignments independently or as a team.
- Bilingual skills (Spanish, Polish, or American Sign Language) are desirable.
