Department: Facility Maintenance
General Statement of Job
The Electrician ensures the efficient operation of electrical systems and equipment.
Specific Duties and Responsibilities
Essential Functions:
- Performs a variety of skilled electrical work, as needed.
- Ensures efficient operation of lighting and power systems through maintenance using established procedures, performance specifications and available equipment.
- Performs preventative maintenance and equipment repairs according to schedule.
- Repairs and/or replaces defective equipment to include ballast, light bulbs, transformers, etc.
- Assists with inspections of new buildings under construction; reviews drawings, plans and submittals.
- Troubleshoots programmable controls, sensors and other electronic devices.
- Uses the college's work order system (CMMS) to note time spent and the work performed relative to specific work request.
- Communicates with contractors and vendors, as needed.
- Responds to radio calls (7 days/24 hours).
- Ensures proper care in the use and maintenance of equipment and supplies; promotes continuous improvement of workplace safety and environmental practices.
- Prepares work order material by pulling from stock to meet technical and trade requirements.
- Operates and conducts routine preventive maintenance on College vehicles; notifies appropriate personnel of any vehicle maintenance required.
- Adheres to safety and health regulations.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- High School Diploma or GED required.
- At least three (3) years of electrician work experience required.
Skills and Abilities
- Excellent oral, written and interpersonal communication skills.
- Strong computer skills with knowledge of Microsoft Office including, but not limited to, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook, the Windows environment, and internet research skills.
- Ability to read and interpret maps, plats, charts, plans, blueprints and/or electrical schematics.
- Demonstrated knowledge of installation, repair and maintenance of electrical systems and equipment.
- Demonstrated knowledge of applicable laws, codes, rules, regulations and/or policies and procedures pertaining to electrical systems.
- Demonstrated knowledge of related machines and tools, including their designs, uses, benefits, repairs, and maintenance.
- Strong analytical, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills and the ability to exercise discretion and sound judgment.
- Ability to prioritize, organize, and complete multiple tasks with attention to detail, within stated deadlines.
- Ability to work independently as well as a team player within department and with others.
- Ability to adapt to constant change and periods of fast-paced, high-intensity work situations.
- Ability to work evenings and/or weekends as needed.
- Ability to travel throughout the district daily; must be insurable under South Texas College's insurance policy for driving.
- Demonstrated commitment to achieving the vision and mission of South Texas College.
- Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
- Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
- Ability to speak effectively before groups of students, customers or employees of organization.
- Ability to apply practical understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions.
- Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.
