Description
The nurse educator promotes and supports excellent nursing care in accordance with the nursing mission and philosophy by providing learning opportunities using evidence-based practice, current nursing practice standards and research findings. Learning opportunities are provided to registered nurses, licensed practical nurses, unlicensed support staff, and nursing students. The nurse educator works collaboratively with patient care managers, staff nurses, and other healthcare professionals and initiates or participates in hospital-wide and unit-based quality improvement projects.
The Department of Nursing Education shares its expertise with all members of the health care team as needed.

Responsibilities- Staff Competency
:
Maintains nursing staff competency by providing individualized, population‑specific unit-based competencies in collaboration with nurse managers. Provides ongoing education via in‑services, computer‑based learning programs, seminars, journal articles, and unit-based reference materials. Collaborates with nurse managers and other health care professionals to identify opportunities for education and provides clinical consultation to patient care managers to help resolve job performance problems. - Clinical Practice Skill Development
:
Enhances the individual clinical practice of staff by assessing clinical reasoning skills and providing learning opportunities to advance clinical competencies, critical thinking, and decision‑making skills. Fosters the development of leadership, teamwork, and customer service skills. - Education Programs
:
Provides educational programs open to staff and other health care professionals by assessing educational needs in collaboration with nurse managers and unit‑based educators. Programs address patient populations, diseases, and clinical conditions and include multidisciplinary interventions that meet psychosocial needs. - Orientation
:
Coordinates and develops orientation for employees, including RN, LPN, PCT, service coordinators, monitor techs, and other staff. Provides specialty classes to meet unit‑specific needs and reviews educational materials to ensure they reflect hospital policies and regulatory standards. - Consultation
:
Provides consultation to administration, managers, and staff to ensure quality outcomes and reviews institutional policies and protocols. Serves as a clinical resource, mentors and facilitates the professional advancement of staff, and role models research and scholarly activities. - Training Center
:
Provides training in Basic Life Support (BLS), Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) to employees who require such certification. Disseminates updates regarding AHA standards throughout the health system. - Professional Development
:
Identifies and seeks growth opportunities within the area of specialization, attends professional activities, and seeks membership in related professional organizations. - Program Evaluation
:
Evaluates the impact of course offerings, revises future initiatives, and designs evaluation tools. Collaborates with directors, managers, and staff to solicit feedback. - Committee Activity
:
Participates in medical center and unit‑specific committees, leads shared governance councils, facilitates unit‑based education such as journal club and nursing grand rounds, and supports improvement initiatives.
Minimum Education
- Required:
Master’s Degree - Specify Degree(s):
Nursing Master’s Degree preferred
- Required:
3‑5 years of previous job‑related experience - Preferred: 6‑10 years of previous job‑related experience

National certification in area of specialty/education expected

ACLS and/or PALS and Basic Life Support (CPR) - Required:
Current Registered Nurse license State of Illinois - Other:
Minimum two years experience within identified area of clinical specialty, certification in clinical specialty highly desired
