Job Description

Hazmat Technician

R+L Carriers

Location: Matteson, IL service center office

Salary: $75,000.00 – $85,000.00 per year

Schedule: Full-Time, Monday-Friday, 40 Hours per week

Summary: Reporting to the Director of Safety, the Hazmat Technician is responsible for the performance of tasks associated with emergency response, hazardous and non‑hazardous materials clean‑up, site‑remediation, equipment decontamination, handling of hazardous materials, and other duties as required.

Responsibilities

Perform emergency response and hazardous material cleanup tasks; conduct site remediation and equipment decontamination; manage hazardous material handling; maintain safety procedures; support training and compliance monitoring; communicate with team and management; keep detailed daily job notes; attend specialized projects as required.

Qualifications
  • 40‑Hour OSHA HAZWOPER certification required
  • Knowledge of OSHA and industry health standards; use appropriate PPE when required
  • Effective communication with team members and other departments
  • Promptly inform management of issues on the job
  • Update job notes daily
  • Physically fit; able to lift 75 lbs.
  • Ability to thrive in a high‑pressure, fast‑paced, team‑supported environment
  • Lead safety in all aspects of emergency response, including R+L procedures, containerizing waste/re‑use products, and completing safety documentation
  • Experience operating tools applicable to emergency response activities
  • Set up and participate in live training events to ensure personnel competency
  • Audit incoming/outgoing hazardous materials shipments for compliance
  • Coaching co‑workers on unsafe behaviors observed
  • Participation in specialized scheduled projects as required
  • Competent in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook)
  • Exceptional interpersonal, customer service, and problem‑solving skills
  • Proven ability to work in a confidential capacity
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks while being detail oriented
