Our mission at the Ohio Department of Youth Services (DYS) is to improve Ohio’s future by habilitating youth and empowering families and communities. DYS is the juvenile corrections system for the state of Ohio, confining felony offenders ages 10–21.
CompensationTeacher salaries range from $66,726 to $113,401 annually, including a 20% supplement and a $5,000 signing incentive.
Benefits & Working Conditions- Small class sizes of 6–8 students.
- Students average 16–18 years old.
- Comprehensive paid training provided.
- Intersession leave: 40 days off per year; 186 student days.
- Additional personal and sick leave.
- No study hall/lunch supervisory responsibilities.
- Assess educational needs of youth and develop/implement lesson plans with individualized assignments and training.
- Provide instruction with individual assistance.
- Counsel students concerning performance, behavior and/or personal problems.
- Organize and/or monitor extracurricular activities if assigned.
- Teacher 1: baccalaureate degree or less; starting pay $66,726.
- Teacher 2: baccalaureate degree & 20 additional quarter hours, less than master’s degree.
- Teacher 3: master’s degree.
- Teacher 4: master’s degree & 30 hours of post‑graduate study.
- Applicant must obtain a Teacher Certificate or License prior to employment.
- Preferred qualifications:
Leadership, commitment to excellence, professionalism, strong interpersonal communication skills, good judgment, change agent, excellent customer service, trauma‑responsive, solution driven. - Ability to use current technology, including computers.
- Interest in professional growth and development.
- Knowledge of ODE Academic Content Standards and project‑based personalized learning.
- Competent in curriculum building and program improvement in content, methods, and materials.
Full‑time, 40 hours per week.
