Overview

JOB SUMMARY The Executive Director is an energetic, creative, and goal-oriented leader with an authentic passion and commitment to the museum’s mission. As the primary representative of the Museum, the Executive Director will promote and present our mission, publicly reflect its values and advance the Board’s vision for the future. The Executive Director is an exceptional community builder who is dedicated to ensuring that the Museum maintains its important standing within the community of Adams, Massachusetts.

An excellent communicator and writer, the Executive Director serves as a representative of the museum locally, regionally, and nationally, acting as a Susan

B. Anthony subject-matter expert. Additionally, overseeing volunteers and paid staff, and in cooperation with the Board of Directors, the Executive Director is responsible for all museum operations including but not limited to, public outreach and fundraising, collections and archives, site maintenance, programming, marketing and meticulous financial management. The Executive Director is organized, knowledgeable, independently motivated, and able to prioritize diverse projects throughout the year.

Responsibilities

Public Relations (25% of role)

  • Proactively increases local, statewide and national awareness and prominence of the Museum and its mission – attracting visitors, volunteers and donors to museum-sponsored events and programs and those sponsored in conjunction with other venues

  • Connects directly with the local community including but not limited to: individuals, media, businesses, school and civic organizations, and local government to ensure the museum maintains its standing as a valuable asset to the public.

  • Oversees online national image and messaging through the Museum website and social media platforms.

  • Maintains integrity of historical scholarship and authority on the life of Susan

    B. Anthony and her activism on behalf of women and society by responding to media inquiries and recognizing and engaging in opportunities to contribute to regional and national publications.

  • Represents the Birthplace at professional meetings and participates with regional and national library, community, and historical trade organizations.

Fundraising (30% of role)

  • Oversees all fundraising initiatives including annual giving campaigns, membership growth, grants and events.

  • Identifies potential new donor partners and cultivates relationships with existing donor partners.

  • Researches, writes and administers grant applications from public and private sources.

  • Executes and continually updates the existing Development plan.

  • Develops new fundraising strategies that increase engagement and revenue from individuals, private foundations, and corporations to ensure the continuing financial health of the museum.

Administration & Programming (25% of role)

  • Manages the daily operations of the museum including staff and volunteer scheduling and providing tours when necessary.

  • Collaborates with the gift shop manager to oversee gift shop activities, sets prices for sale items, and fulfills other responsibilities specific to retail sales.

  • Attends board meetings as an ad hoc member and supports board committee activities.

  • Collaborates with the Board to develop the strategic direction and establish initiatives to fulfill the mission of the museum.

  • With assistance from the Treasurer and administrative assistant, ensures fiscal responsibility through the development of and adherence to an annual budget.

  • Recruits, trains and manages staff, interns, and volunteers.

  • Trains tour hosts, docents, interns and staff in accordance with the Museum Docent Guidelines and Museum Docent Manual.

  • Ensures relevant programmatic excellence through creative development and execution of programs.

  • Coordinates the scheduling, execution and installation of programming and annual special exhibit.

  • Solicits items for our collection of artifacts, and researches materials, historical photographs, papers and other items important to the 19th century theme of the museum.

  • Promotes and advocates for the Museum accreditation through Museum Assessment Program.

  • Works with volunteers, interns, and staff on projects to assure assigned areas of responsibility are understood and performed within the guidelines of the Museum mission.

Maintenance (10% of role)

  • Works with the Collections Committee to ensure the mMuseum’s collection is well preserved and appropriately stored in accordance with a collections policy.

  • Manages and monitors the birthplace’s maintenance by ensuring preservation and care for its historic elements and optimization of its building space.

  • In cooperation with volunteers and paid contractors, ensures appropriate landscaping and garden maintenance that is inviting to the public.

Other Duties

  • Cooperates with production of The Birthplace Banner, the museum’s annual newspaper newsletter.

  • Cooperates with staff for shipping on-line Gift Shop orders, as needed.

  • Other duties as assigned.
