Station Mechanic – Renewable Energy

Location:

Northfield, MA | Job Type: Non‑exempt (hourly) | Position Type:
Full‑time | Unionized with the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers

Key Responsibilities
  • Read and understand engineering prints, electrical and mechanical drawings and schematics
  • Operate the generating units and perform switching/tagging and energy isolation responsibilities
  • Lay out and set up work activities and maintain facilities support
  • Perform troubleshooting, maintenance and repair work on station equipment and other associated equipment
  • Perform preventive maintenance, rigging needed to lift, move, and position heavy equipment, and operate manual, pneumatic, hydraulic, and electrical tools
  • Communicate technical information and equipment status updates in a clear and concise manner
  • Collaborate with personnel from other departments such as Operations, Engineering, Mechanics, and Safety to ensure efficient and safe operation and maintenance of the facilities
  • Act as a team member with all First Light employees and maintain all required licenses
  • Respond to emergencies or unanticipated needs outside of normal working hours
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned
Job Qualifications / Skills
  • High School Diploma or equivalent required
  • 4+ years of experience in a general plant maintenance role
  • Must hold an MA Department of Public Safety Hoisting Engineer License or be able to obtain one within 3 months
  • Valid DOT Medical Card required or obtainable
  • Experience with industrial or utility generating plant equipment such as pumps, control valves, instrumentation, controllers, and associated equipment
  • Knowledge of safety and environmental regulations
  • Knowledge of reading data, drawings, schematics, and results of equipment checks
  • Valid motor vehicle operator’s license and/or CDL required
  • Ability to work overtime, rotating shifts, and vacation relief as applicable
  • Ability to respond to plant emergencies, call‑ins, and on‑call services (days, nights, holidays, and weekends)
  • Proficient written and verbal communication skills
  • Highly organized self‑starter with strong planning and multitasking capabilities
  • Self‑motivated, independent, and effective in team environments with a positive attitude
Physical Requirements
  • Capable of frequently standing, walking, balancing, sitting, reaching, climbing, bending, stooping, squatting, kneeling, grasping, pushing, pulling, and lifting (up to 50 lbs.) for prolonged periods and performing repetitive motions
  • Ability to work indoors and outdoors, in any weather, on station structures, ladders, staging, and equipment for extended periods of time and exposure to high voltage equipment, loud noises, and confined spaces
  • Ability to hear and understand audible alarms and detect changes in noise levels of equipment
  • Must be physically capable of entering and working in confined spaces and performing demanding work at various heights, during operations, shutdowns, and fire/emergency activities
  • Must be physically capable of wearing PPE including fall protection equipment, hard‑hat, safety shoes, safety glasses, and respirators as applicable
  • Ability to pass a respirator physical and respirator fit test (if applicable)
  • Required to have eyesight corrected at 20/40 to accurately read and interpret instruments, gauges, and manuals
  • Manual dexterity sufficient to operate standard office equipment and write and/or type
