Assistant Sewer Superintendent

QualificationsPosition Requirements
- Candidates must possess a high school diploma or GED equivalent and maintain a valid driver’s license.
- Applicants must hold a Massachusetts Grade 5C or 6C Wastewater Operator License and have a minimum of two (2) years of experience in wastewater treatment or a related field. Candidates holding a Grade 5 license will be considered, with the understanding that the selected individual must obtain a Grade 6 license within six (6) months of hire.
- Applicants should have working knowledge of wastewater treatment methods, techniques, and laboratory practices, as well as fundamental computer skills. Strong organizational skills and the ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, are required.
- This position requires working four (4) hours of overtime on Saturdays and Sundays every fourth weekend, up to three (3) holidays per year, participation in a 24-hour emergency on-call rotation, and additional overtime as assigned.
- Lab, maintenance, and administrative responsibilities.
- Participate in the daily operation of the treatment plant and sewage pumping stations; assist the Superintendent in monitoring and controlling the wastewater treatment process.
- Analyze and evaluate operational, laboratory, and maintenance functions and records; apply corrective measures to address potential issues and maintain proper mechanical and biological processes.
- Prepare reports for supervisory review and submit recommendations for plant needs as required by the Superintendent.
- Perform laboratory tests for process control and compliance monitoring, including sampling influent and effluent for pH, TSS, BOD5, ammonia, nitrogen, phosphorus,
E. coli, and PFAS; conduct additional tests as required; monitor computer readings to ensure efficient plant operation; analyze process results. - Prepare samples for outside laboratory analysis.
- Conduct preventative and corrective maintenance on plant equipment.
- Assist with grounds keeping and upkeep of the WWTP site and buildings.
- Familiarity with nutrient removal processes, including denitrification and biological phosphorus removal, as well as general wastewater treatment process control concepts, is beneficial but not required. Candidates with interest or exposure to these areas will be viewed favorably, and training will be provided as needed.
- Thorough knowledge of the principles and operating procedures of wastewater treatment and sanitary sewer systems. Working knowledge of the materials, methods, and techniques of wastewater treatment, and state and federal pollution control regulations.
- Knowledge of or experience with SCADA systems.
- Massachusetts Grade 5 or 6 Wastewater Treatment Operator license
- Massachusetts Class D Driver’s License
