Major Responsibilities- Organize and maintain the supplies and equipment for the Science Department
- Prepare materials for laboratories and demonstrations
- Supervision of laboratories and assistants
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Department Leader
Roles and Responsibilities
Organize and maintain the supplies and equipment for the Science Department
- Establish and maintain an inventory of materials available indicating number, amounts and condition
- Catalog and distribute lists of available materials such as supplies, equipment, demonstration apparatus, and special audio-visual aids
- Maintain stockrooms and supply areas in a clean and orderly fashion. Student assistants will be available.
- Attend to the proper storage and security of science supplies and equipment
- Assume the responsibility to maintain in good working order the increasing number of instruments and variety of sophisticated equipment being continually used in the laboratories. Adjust, repair and clean laboratory instruments and equipment
- Have a knowledge of science supply items, nomenclature and specifications to collect, collate and prepare the annual science supply order under the direction of the Department Leader
- Receive science orders, unpack and store materials, checking the packing lists and invoices for approval for payments
- Arrange for repair and maintenance of equipment on a regular basis
- Inventory and buy perishable biology items needed for experiments
- Prepare lists of maintenance and repair work needed in the Science Center, labs and classrooms
Prepare materials for laboratories and demonstrations
- Assist in the maintenance of a multiplicity of concurrent laboratory set-ups necessary for open laboratory work and independent study
- Help teachers to maintain stock solutions in all laboratories. Upon request, provide teachers with equipment, special chemicals, specimen and educational materials necessary for quality teaching
- Assist in the testing of new experiments and demonstrations
Supervision of laboratories and assistants
- Supervise student laboratory assistants who will aid in clean-up and maintenance of the science areas
- Assume the responsibility for the training and supervision of student laboratory assistants in preparing culture media, operating autoclaves and incubators, and in preparing stock solutions
- Supervise laboratory or project work of individuals, or small groups during or after school depending on the need and available time
Perform other duties as assigned by the Department Leader
- Assist the Department Leader with the preparation of the Science Department budget
- Assist the Department Leader in gathering data necessary for various reports
- Upon request, assist teachers in arranging speakers and/or field trips.
- Apply, with permission of the Department Leader, for any available money for projects (i.e. Acton Conservation Trust)
- Help order and organize resource books for various courses
- Order and organize periodicals
- Perform other duties as assigned
