Girls’ Angle, a nonprofit math club for girls, seeks extraordinary women majoring in math or related fields, graduate students in math, or postdocs in math to mentor girls roughly aged 10-18 in a friendly and meaningful way, helping them to grow in knowledge and understanding of math as well as become better thinkers and problem solvers. Mentors are the heart and soul of Girls’ Angle.
They conduct the direct, in-person math education that Girls’ Angle delivers at the Girls’ Angle club, which meets most Thursdays during the term from 3:45-5:45. Mentors work as a team to provide the highest quality math education possible under supervision of a Head Mentor.
The weekly time commitment is not particularly demanding (approx. 3 hrs. per week), but it is demanding in terms of what mentors are expected to accomplish. Mentors create a safe, friendly, welcoming environment conducive to exploring mathematics. Mentors must be able to shift gears quickly to adapt to girls’ different learning styles, levels, and personalities. Mentors aim to inspire girls to do math through inspiration instead of assignment.
Mentors also serve as role models.
Mentors need strong fundamentals in mathematics and most mentors are undergraduate majors in math or related fields, graduate students in math, or postdocs in math. Mentors also get first dibs on other Girls’ Angle work opportunities, such as helping to host one of our Math Collaborations.
It’s a fun and exciting challenge!
Skills, qualifications and other requirements:Mentors must have solid mathematical fundamentals and enjoy working with girls, roughly
aged 10-18.
Hourly wage:Undergraduates: $35/hour. Graduate students: $45/hour. Postdocs: $55/hour.
