The Marine Transportation Department is seeking professional candidates for a full-time, tenure track professional maritime faculty member. We are interested in experienced mariners who will be able to teach in a variety of basic and advanced professional maritime subjects including Basic Safety Training, Radar, ARPA, ECDIS, Ship Construction, GMDSS, Tanker Operations, Mate of Towing and Small Vessel Operations, Seamanship, Terrestrial and Celestial Navigation, Dynamic Positioning, Ship handling and Bridge Resource Management.
Other courses may be included as the needs of the department dictate and background experience allow. The selectee will report to the Marine Transportation chair.
- Ability to teach an academic course load of 12 credits per semester.
- Possess excellent written and oral communication skills, computer literacy, and an understanding of the Academy's unique mission.
- Provide support to students through academic advising of assigned students and hold a minimum of three (3) office/instruction hours each week.
- Demonstrated commitment to mentoring and student development, along with a dedication to fostering a sense of belonging in the maritime industry.
- Prepare course materials and examinations with minimal assistance.
- Contribute to the development and implementation of high-quality curriculum for the changing needs of the industry.
- Assess cadets to STCW standards in the classroom, simulators, aboard the fleet of academy small vessels and on the new training ship Patriot State II.
- Participate in the annual training cruise on alternating years as a Professional Maritime Faculty member (Blue/Gold teams).
- Engage in scholarship and professional development that advances the mission of the Marine Transportation Department and the university.
- Participate in the decision-making process by serving on departmental and standing committees of the university.
- Maintain a valid USCG Merchant Mariner Credential.
- Comply with MMA’s military customs, uniforms and ranks as outlined in the current contractual agreement.
- Hold a bachelor’s degree in Marine Transportation or an appropriate related field.
- Hold a USCG Second Mate's Oceans Unlimited Tonnage Merchant Mariner Credential (MMC) or a USCG Master 1600 GRT MMC with command time, and have current Standard of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping (STCW) qualifications.
- Have three years of full-time experience teaching at an accredited institution of higher learning, or five years of service in a professional maritime field (or a combination thereof).
- Possess an understanding of teaching and advising processes and the application of teaching and advising in the university setting.
- Exhibit excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Have proficient computer skills.
- Understand the unique mission of the university as a Maritime Academy.
- Seagoing experience at the command level.
- Endorsements such as Dynamic Positioning, Master/Mate of Towing Vessels, Designated Examiner Towing Vessels.
- Shoreside experience in the maritime industry.
$74,000 - $84,000 per year, based on education, qualifications and experience.
