JOB TITLE: Visual Arts Teacher
REPORTS TO: Principal
POSITION STATEMENT: The Visual Arts Teacher is responsible for designing and delivering a comprehensive middle and high school visual arts program that emphasizes studio practice, artistic process, and critical thinking. Instruction includes, but is not limited to, drawing, painting, printmaking, design, mixed media, and portfolio development. The teacher supports Mount Greylock Regional School District’s commitment to high academic and artistic standards, equitable access to instruction, and the social‑emotional growth of all students.
Qualifications- Bachelor’s Degree required;
Master’s Degree preferred. - Licensed, or eligible for licensure, in Visual Art (5–12) by the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education.
- Demonstrated knowledge of adolescent development and effective instructional practices for middle and high school learners.
- Strong studio background across multiple visual arts disciplines (e.g., drawing, painting, printmaking, design, mixed media).
- Excellent interpersonal and written communication skills.
- Commitment to ongoing professional growth in visual arts content, pedagogy, and emerging media.
- Develop and implement plans for the curriculum program assigned and show written evidence of preparation as required.
- Plan and use appropriate instructional/learning strategies, activities, materials and equipment that reflect accommodation and regulatory compliance regarding the individual needs of students with IEPs and 504 plans.
- Expand the students’ use of individual and collaborative strategies to generate concepts and ideas. Incorporate new technologies and tools in the creative process. Teach students how to identify elements and techniques used to create concepts.
- Teach students to apply elements of design and modern principles of art. Further the students’ knowledge of visual arts and media through art theory and history. Develop an aesthetic understanding and appreciation that allows students to make qualitative judgements about art. Enable students to make a functional portfolio of their art works. Plan, coordinate and prepare art displays and exhibitions for the school.
Assist students with effective display and presentation of their works. Evaluate each student’s performance on a continual basis. Communicate with staff and parents on student progress. Select and maintain required inventory of materials, tools, instructional aids and equipment. Instruct students in the use and storage of materials, tools and equipment to ensure good materials management. - Cooperate with other members of the staff in planning and implementing instructional goals, objectives and methods according to the MA Curriculum Frameworks.
- Use appropriate technologies in the teaching and learning process.
- Use formative and summative assessment to inform instruction and improve student achievement.
- Be a positive role model for students that supports the mission, vision and core beliefs of the district including a commitment to embracing a culture of diversity, belonging, equity and inclusion.
- Create an environment that is respectful, challenging, and responsive to diverse student needs including the physical, social and emotional development of all students.
- Demonstrate sound behavior management practices and administer restorative based practices according to school and district policies and administrative regulations.
- Maintain a professional relationship with all colleagues, students, parents and community members.
- Maintain accurate and complete records as required by law, district policy and administrative regulations.
- Actively participate in departmental, team and administrative meetings.
- Other duties as assigned by the Principal and in accordance with the collective bargaining agreement between the Mount Greylock Educators’ Association and the Mount Greylock Regional School District Committee.
