Description

The Williams College Chemistry Department invites applications for a tenure-track position in inorganic/materials chemistry at the assistant professor level beginning in July 2026. We especially seek candidates who will contribute to the intellectual vibrancy and diversity of the academic community through their research, teaching and service. We welcome applications from candidates of all backgrounds and strongly encourage individuals whose experiences and perspectives will enhance our commitment to academic excellence and innovation to apply.

The successful candidate will develop a dynamic and productive experimental research program in inorganic or materials chemistry (broadly defined) that actively engages undergraduate students. They will also have a strong commitment to teaching, mentoring and advising a diverse population of undergraduate students. The teaching load per semester typically includes complete responsibility for one lecture and two laboratory sections in addition to the supervision of student research projects.

The successful candidate is expected to teach courses in materials and inorganic chemistry, and will be expected to join the teaching rotation for general introductory chemistry, instrumental methods of analysis, and potentially a course for non-science majors or an upper-level elective currently not offered. It is expected that the candidate will participate meaningfully in the Winter Study curriculum during January.

We welcome applications from inorganic chemists and materials scientists from all fields, with a preference given to applicants who will complement existing curricular and research offerings.

Williams College is a liberal arts institution with a long history of excellence in the sciences, and an equal emphasis on teaching and scholarship. Successful candidates will join the department's 15 current faculty in supporting a thriving undergraduate chemistry major. Our department graduates about 30-40 majors each year, offers a congenial working environment and state-of-the-art facilities supporting year-round research. Start-up funds to establish a research program, substantial internal support for research and a generous sabbatical program are provided.

Successful candidates are encouraged to develop an externally funded research program. The College is prepared to support faculty applications to a range of federal and private funding sources. Qualifications

For full consideration, candidates must hold a Ph.D. degree by September 2025, and postdoctoral experience is strongly preferred.

The research statement (typically 3-6 pages) should include an outline of your proposed research over the next 5 years, plans for engaging undergraduate researchers, for advancing your scholarship and for attracting external funding. In your teaching statement (typically 1-2 pages), comment on your motivation for teaching and on your approach to providing a positive learning environment inside and outside of the classroom, and a brief description of a non-majors or upper-level course you would ideally like to teach.

In the application materials, we ask candidates to speak specifically to their approach to promoting an inclusive community and to working effectively with a student, staff, and faculty population that is broadly diverse.
