The Controller is responsible for overseeing all financial and accounting operations of the construction company. This role ensures accurate financial reporting, effective cost control, compliance with regulations, and strong internal controls, with a focus on job costing, work-in-progress (WIP) reporting, and cash flow management.
Key Responsibilities- Oversee daily accounting operations including general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and fixed assets
- Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements in accordance with GAAP
- Manage the monthly close process and ensure timely, accurate reporting
- Prepare and analyze WIP schedules, job cost reports, and profitability by project
- Develop and maintain budgets, forecasts, and cash flow projections
- Monitor job costing, cost codes, change orders, retainage, revenue recognition
- Ensure accurate percentage-of-completion accounting
- Review project margins and provide variance analysis to project managers and executives
- Support project start-up, billing, and close-out processes
- Maintain strong internal controls and accounting policies
- Ensure compliance with tax, payroll, labor, and regulatory requirements
- Coordinate external audits, tax filings, and insurance audits (workers’ comp, general liability)
- Oversee lien waivers, subcontractor compliance, and certified payroll (if applicable)
- Manage cash flow, banking relationships, lines of credit, and bonding requirements
- Oversee billing, collections, and payables to maintain healthy cash position
- Assist with bonding, financial statements, and lender reporting
- Supervise and mentor accounting staff
- Work closely with project managers, operations, and executive leadership
- Provide financial insights to support strategic decision‑making
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (CPA preferred)
- 5–10+ years of accounting experience, with significant construction industry experience
- Strong knowledge of construction accounting, WIP, and job costing
- Proficiency in construction accounting software
- Advanced Excel skills
- Strong analytical, organizational, and leadership skills
- Excellent communication and problem-solving abilities
150,000 to 160,000 annually
Compensation is based on a range of factors that include relevant experience, knowledge, skills, other job-related qualifications.
