Overview

The Union County Prosecutor is seeking an experienced Paralegal to perform a variety of duties in support of the Prosecutor and Assistant Prosecuting Attorneys. Under general direction of the Prosecutor, responsibilities include processing Grand Jury indictments prior to and after presentation, preparing warrants/summons, coordinating grand juror attendance, reviewing non-support referrals and draft indictments for prosecutor review, preparing discovery responses, preparing jury venire, and assisting at jury selection.

Uses investigative tools to assist investigators with location of defendants/witnesses, drafts investigative and/or grand jury subpoenas, updates Matrix software program as needed, and maintains record of equipment rotation. Assists with trial preparation, reviews case files and prepares court documents (e.g. motions, entries).

  • Possession of an associate’s degree in paralegal studies and two (2) years’ experience; or any equivalent combination of education, experience, and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. Bachelor’s degree in criminal justice or equivalent preferred.
  • Must be able to deal with many variables, organize and maintain large volumes of information and paperwork, and have excellent communication (both orally and in writing) and interpersonal skills.
Licensure or Certification Requirements

Possession of a Paralegal certificate preferred. Have or obtain Notary Commission. Must pass a background check to access Criminal Justice Information Systems.

Equipment Operated

The following are examples only and are not intended to be all inclusive:

  • Personal computer, applicable computer software, printer, photo printer, copy machine, fax machine, typewriter, and other standard business office equipment. Familiarity with Matrix Prosecutor preferred.
Inherently Hazardous or Physically Demanding Working Conditions

The employee has exposure to chemical compounds found in an office environment (e.g., toner, correction fluid, etc.); is exposed to possible injury due to unclean or unsanitary conditions; has contact with potentially violent or emotionally distraught persons; works in or around crowds; has exposure to hazardous driving conditions; ascends and/or descends ladders, stairs, or scaffolds; has to work irregular hours.

Note:

In accordance with the U.S. Department of Labor physical demands strength ratings, this is considered sedentary to light work. For purposes of 42 USC 12101:

  • Responds to discovery requests, processes grand jury indictments, and prepares requests for summons/warrants. Coordinates grand juror attendance, updates arraignment information, prepares jury venire including background information, drafts investigative/grand jury subpoenas. Updates the Matrix system and helps train new users, as needed.
  • Assists prosecutors with trial preparation procedures (e.g., organizes binders, exhibits, etc.); assists prosecutors in creating exhibits (e.g., maps, photos, etc.); obtains quotes for agency IT services and orders new office equipment.
  • Maintains required licensures, certification, and continuing education requirements, if any.
  • Meets all job safety requirements and all applicable safety standards that pertain to essential functions.
  • Demonstrates regular and predictable attendance.

    work alone on most tasks; prepare accurate documentation; complete routine forms; maintain records according to established procedures; lift file boxes; handle sensitive inquiries from and contacts with officials and general public; develop and maintain effective working relationships; perform job safely.
