Overview
Description of Duties: Under the direction of the Dean of Student Development, provide comprehensive counseling services in support of the College’s recruitment, retention, and completion efforts. The Counselor provides personal, career and educational counseling to students. Responsibilities include participating in orientation activities, individual and group counseling sessions, classroom presentations, workshops, assessment and placement interpretation, outreach activities, evening assignments, and liaison duties with instructional and student services departments.
The assignment includes curriculum development, development and assessment of student learning outcomes, engagement in professional activities, participation in shared governance and committee work, and utilizing intervention strategies to support students experiencing academic, personal, or career-related challenges. In addition, duties include using technologies and systems related to student information systems, case management, and educational planning to support student success.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
- Assist students in developing educational and career goals through the development of comprehensive student educational plans.
- Teach counseling classes each semester as assigned, either in-load or extra pay.
- Deliver counseling services through multiple modalities (in-person, virtual, etc.) to expand access to students. Confer with and advise faculty regarding matters of administrative procedure in such areas as admissions and records, articulation and course equivalency, and communication with other colleges and universities.
- Administer tests and inventories to groups or individuals and interpret the results to counselees.
- Develop and maintain close working relationships with instructional areas, outreach centers, feeder high schools, neighboring colleges and community resource agencies; articulate programs with feeder high schools; foster good high school/college relations.
- Assignment may include evening and weekend counseling as well as services to outreach locations, including secondary schools.
- Provide intervention strategies to increase the retention and persistence of students in general.
- Assignment may include providing counseling services to special student populations (e.g. Athletes, ESL students, Veterans).
- Assist students in analyzing their aptitudes and interests and to learn decision-making processes related to their academic and career planning.
- Assist students in determining the best educational program for preparation for a chosen career/vocation;
- Assist students with course selection and college activities to maximize the students’ opportunities and potential.
- Develop student educational plans that encompass both the course work and supplemental needs of students.
- Develop transfer plans that meet eligibility requirements for 4-year colleges and universities.
- Assist students with resolution of personal problems or provide them with appropriate referrals on campus or within the community.
- Participate in department, division, and college-wide committees and meetings.
- Work in a collaborative and professional manner within and outside of the department.
- Participate in the shared-governance process.
- Complete all duties as assigned by the Dean
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: The successful candidate, by the final filing date, must possess the minimum qualifications at least one of the disciplines below. Please review the Minimum Qualifications Handbook to view the required qualifications to teach a specific discipline.
- Master’s in counseling, rehabilitation counseling, clinical psychology, counseling psychology, guidance counseling, educational counseling, social work, or career development, marriage and family therapy, or marriage, family and child counseling,
OR the equivalent.
