Overview
The job purpose of an electrical apprentice is to gain practical experience and learn the necessary skills under the supervision of a qualified electrician. Apprenticeship combines classroom education and paid on-the-job experience to learn concepts and skills necessary to become a certified electrician. Apprentice electricians work under the observation of a journey-level electrician, building basic skills and gaining additional tasks and responsibilities as they improve.
Skills typically covered include how to design, install and repair commercial or residential electrical systems.
- Learning and Training — spend the majority of time learning under the supervision of qualified electricians, attending classroom lectures, studying electrical theory and codes, and participating in hands-on training sessions.
- Assisting Electricians — work closely with experienced electricians to assist with installing wiring, conduit, and electrical components, and to troubleshoot and repair electrical systems.
- Safety Compliance — maintain a safe working environment by following safety protocols and regulations, including using PPE and adhering to safety guidelines.
- Documenting and Reporting — maintain accurate records and report observations or findings to the supervising electrician, including installation details, checklists, and project progress updates.
- Learning and Adapting — learn and adapt to new technologies and industry standards through workshops, seminars, or training sessions to stay up-to-date with trends and advancements.
- Minimum Requirement:
At least 18 years of age or older;
High School Diploma, GED or Equivalency;
Able to pass Basic Skills Test, Multi-Craft Aptitude Test, Color Identification Test and Drug Screen.

The apprentice must be able to follow direction, interpret blueprints to determine where electrical devices need to be installed, and be a capable problem solver. The role requires organization, analytical thinking, and the strength and stamina for occasional heavy lifting. Apprentices should be able to act on supervisor instructions and work well alone or as part of a team.
Typical Working ConditionsElectricians' work is often strenuous. They may stand for long periods and frequently work on ladders and scaffolds. The working environment varies by job and can be dusty, dirty, hot, or wet, or involve confined spaces, ditches, or other difficult locations. Risks include electrical shock, falls, and cuts; safety procedures must be followed. Some electricians may need to travel to jobsites, potentially up to 80 miles away.

Electricians use hand tools such as screwdrivers, pliers, knives, and saws, as well as power tools (band saws, reciprocating saws, drills) and testing equipment (voltmeters, ammeters, ohmmeters).
Essential Physical TasksIdentifying and separating wires by color; digging and working in trenches; breaking concrete with jackhammers or similar tools; assisting in moving, positioning and fastening heavy electrical equipment; lifting and positioning objects such as light fixtures, wire, conduit, junction boxes, motors and other equipment; carrying materials and tools between locations; working from A-frames, extension ladders, and scaffolds at various heights; crawling under floors and into attics;
working in hot or cold weather, indoors and outdoors; lifting and working with tools and equipment overhead.
